Is there an advantage to having adjustable objective on a variable scope as compared to not having it?    I noticed the ones with AO seem to cost a little more.

It depends on what the scope is used for and how much magnification is on the upper end.  For big game hunting at typical big game shooting distances, you don't need A/O.  If the scope tops out at above 10X or so and you're shooting at small varmints or target shooting, AO will eliminate parallax problems.

The adjustable objective is used to focus more precisely on the target. It will help eliminate parallax, which is the apparent shift of the target against the reticle caused by a change in observer position.  This is a very good feature to have for longer range shooting.  Most lower magnifaction scopes (3-9x) without AO are factory set at 100 yds.

AO's are not created equal, some hardly work, ---  The thread pitch in the AO determines how much crank it takes to make it work, on most, the difference between infinity and 300 yds is hardly noticable, Since most long range shooting is at the infinity setting, an AO's greatest advantage is a short to intermediate range.

An AO on a variable  is of little use until you get into the higher powers of the variable. Higher mag. fixed powers make the most use of the AO.

Thinking about buying this Nikon scope at SWFA:

Nikon 3.3-10x44 Monarch UCC Riflescope

I want to be able to shoot from 25 to 200 yds.....maybe 300 if possible.....would that be a good choice?

I want a varaible.  This will go on an AR-15. That is the one with mild-dot and matte finish.

Yes, that would be a good choice at a good price, and although you wouldn't need A/O for that application and that magnification range, it won't hurt to have it.
