Hello,
I have an AR15 with which I've used an EOTech 516 for the past year. The problem has been with an Astigmatism in my eyes though which caused the bright reticle to starburst and become hard to see clearly at distances. I can still put the bright blob on a target under 25 yards and pull the trigger but for anything further out I couldn't aim consistently.

So I sold the EOTech to get something else, I believe an aimpoint will cause me the same issues so an ACOG is looking like a good option for me, how will this work at closer ranges though? I'd prefer something without magnification but the TA31F i was looking at is 4x. Does anyone use an ACOG for close quarters or are there any other options for me?

Thanks!

I used an Acog on the range 50yds - 3yds doing drills and liked it. But I did not like it for clearing rooms etc. Eotech was my choice there.

I think some of the 1-4's could suit you. They have scope reticles and on 1x are very usable up close. Still odd to room clear with but being able to dial down to 1x makes it pretty easy.

SWFA makes a 1-4 and a 1-6(coming soon) that are the type I think may work for you.

The eotech reticle isn't the best for clarity, in my humblest of opinions.  Before settling on anything, I would suggest you take a look at Aimpoint.

A good 1-4 or 1-6X is an option, but head position is more important than with a reflex or red dot optic.

I always ask this, but did you possibly have the reticle on the EO too bright? Did the reticle look "blobish" at all settings?

I only ask this because I've seen some guys at the range complain that the dot is whacked, only to find that when they tune them down a bit, they become usable.

Also plus 1 RC's Aimpoint recommendation. Micro's are "hella wicked"....Big Grin

Gotta agree with RC ... Aimpoint > EoTech and I have used both.  On the ACOG ... Im a big fan of ACOGs but they do have a learning curve.  The BAC models work but take time to get quick with.  The eye relief on the 4x models is not great.  This doesn't bother me as I smash my nose on the charging handle when shooting an AR anyway.  The 3.5x models have much better eye relief.  The compact models are a nice compromise but it depends on your application and intended range.  I have a TA31F on a Colt 6920 and with bulk LC M855 hitting E type sized steel at 600 yards is not a problem.

If your not looking to shoot past 300 then a Aimpoint with a battle type zero at 25 would be my suggestion.  If you want to stretch out of 600 then an ACOG would fit the bill.  Some research on the ACOGs and which models are designed for your platform is in order.  Also know that ACOGs are designed around a specific round.  Make sure you get the model for your barrel length, etc.  Mount it as designed, on the right barrle length, with the right ammo, and it will work.

I had the brightness turned down almost all the way, it was the only way I could use it but it would wash out then.

I did take a look at the Aimpoint micro H-1 today and it was pretty nice. It was the 4moa dot though, Has anyone found a place for the 2moa version that just came out?

I also looked at the TA31F but wow the eye relief would be hard to get used to in a quick situation. I couldn't imagine trying to use that quickly indoors. Maybe I should get both and Mount the Micro canted off to the side so I can roll the rifle sideways for indoors.

If max shot will be 300 yards or so, why do you need magnification?

My Aimpoint does fine to 300+ (2MOA dot.)  Granted, it ain't a precision fire optic, but the rifle it sits atop ain't precision either.

I think i'm liking this ACOG

with this Mount

Anyone know what the eye relief is like with the lower power ACOGs?

QD LT105 is what you use if you are trying to lay a back up iron sight behind the ACOG. I prefer the RCO and I dont have irons on that rifle but if you want flip up irons the Lt105 is good. My 3x Compact ACOG really needs the RCO mount because the eye relief is much shorter where my 1.5x has way more eye relief.  The RCO can be mounted forward but nothing else can be mounted as far back as it can.
