This is a mistake.  Your binocular should be the optic that you spend the greater amount on.  It will (should) be used far more often, for longer periods, and in more critical conditions than your riflescope ever will.

I'm hoping I can present this without sounding like I'm ragging on you, flashpoint.  That definitely is not my intent. Your question is just fortuitously timed as I was recently thinking about this very issue.

It is an area of great interest to me that very commonly people come on this and other boards stating that they can't spend very much money but that they really are just interested in "optics quality." They then almost invariably end up buying some low-end roof prism binocular.  This tells me that "optics quality" was never really their primary concern.

This is a simple principle that gets bantered about alot and then almost summarily ignored.  You CANNOT match (or even come close) to the optical quality of a good porro prism binocular with any roof prism design unless you are spending at least 3x (and quite possibly more) the amount of money as the cost of the Porro prism binocular.

So, what does this mean for you, flashpoint?  It means that you IF optics quality is truly your primary concern, then you NEED to ignore all of the sub-$300 roof prism binoculars flooding the market and focus (pun intended) your attention on the various high-quality Porro prism options.  A good place to start would include the Leupold Yosemite, Mesa, or Cascade, Bushnell Legend, Nikon Action Extreme, Pentax PCF WP II, Swift Audubon, etc.
