So my mother calls and wants me to buy for her a new rifle scope for my father. He shoots a 30-06 gamemaster pump for whitetails only. I know he wants something around 4-12x50 and has a large FOV and good light trans. So if anyone could recommend a scope for <$300 I would appreciate it. I'm a die hard bow hunter and know very little about what rifle scopes are out there.

Welcome Brett. Man, there are so many good choices out there it's mind boggling. IMO, you don't need a 4-12 X 50... I'd stick to a typical 3-9 X 40, 2.5-8 X 36, etc. Something less heavy and bulky. I'd recommend a Sightron Big Sky, Zeiss Conquest or a Leupold VX2 or VX3 for starters. A large FOV is very useful as is adequate eye relief. Others by Vortex (Viper or Diamondback), Meopta (Meopro), Minox ZA3 all all great choices. Additionally, Bushnell, Burris and Nikon have solid choices as well. Good luck!

This is one of the close outs and would be a great scope for your described purposes. I have a number of Sightron Big Sky scopes and all are outstanding scopes.

I'm going to suggest spending a little more to get a top of the line optic at a bargain price.  Zeiss is a name everyone recognizes and agrees is a top quality optic.  This model is factory refurbished from Zeiss and has their Lifetime transferable warranty.  What makes this a particularly nice choice is not only the fact that the glass is excellent but the very useful Rapid Z600 reticle which can be used to accurately target game out to 600 yds. The Zeiss web site explains how you set it up.  I have one of the Conquest scopes in a 4.5-14 and I like it a lot for a hunting scope, I also have a 3-9 conquest plex and I sure wish it had the Rapid Z600 reticle. If I was buying for myself this is the scope I would buy.

J.M.O but I really don't think the Conquest has anything on the Sightron Big Sky other than the Zeiss name.
