So I'm shopping around for scope parts to put on a Remington 700 LTR.  I never expected bases and scope rings to be so expensive.  Now as far as the rings go, I can see where you'd want to pay more for a quality set, but the bases, what about those?  Are not all bases just a piece of machined metal made from a fairly simple design?  What do I need to look for in a base and what do I need to stay away from?  Any companies to really stay away from and why?

I know I sound like a broken record, but I am a real fan of Burris mounts and rings. Sure they aren't the very top of the line, but have never had one fail on me. Value for dollar they get my vote. Ok.. I will stop now. :)

There is quite a bit of differences in bases and how they are made. good stuff (and expensive) are usually made one at a time, machined, and feature things like recoil lugs, larger screws sometimes a cant to rail, also the bottom is very uniform such that 100% of it contacts the receiver, with no hills or valleys as is seen with investment cast, mim, or mass producted parts. The angles that form the ledges gripped by the rings are closer tolerance, for example. usually they are used when large top heavy scopes are used where sleekness and min. weight are not a desired feature. However twist in's (particularly weaver tip-offs) and such have been serving shooters for 60 years, so yous picks your poison.

Oh, I did have one other suggestion: If you are thinking tactical stick with 1 piece base made of the same material as your scope tube. i.e. If your tube is steel use a steel base if it is an aluminum scope tube use a aluminum base. Sticking with the same material one piece base minimized the strain on the scope tube from thermal expansion, therefore keeping zero better through a range of temps. Just my two cents.

Thanks for the suggestions guys.  I'm looking for an Elite 4200 or Monarch in a fairly high power, but I'm watching some auctions at the moment to see what sort of a deal I can get.  And Cheaptrick, thanks for the links, I was looking at Badger Ordnance and just the base about equals what you linked me to.  I'll have to do some searching in this section to see what else I can come up with.  If anybody has any other suggestions, let me know.  I'm all about trying new companies or picking the under dog.

Edited to add that I won't be going larger than a 44mm objective.
