I have just purchased a new Zeiss Conquest Scope
3.5-10x50 to mount on my 338win magnum.
I do not know a lot about Zeiss products except for what I can read on the net.
Have I done the right thing.

Hard to beat the conquest line, nice glass, good eye relief and the best plex reticle in the business.

Excellent scope!  I personally would have bought the 44mm version of that scope if it were me.  I don't care for the increased bulk and mounting height of 50mm objectives on 1" tube scopes for a general hunting rifle, but that's me.  It's a very fine scope, though, and you'll get many years of enjoyment out of it.

The reason I went with the 50mm was because the Twilight Factor is higher, and at my age I need all the light I can get.

I have owned several Conquests and still own (2) Zeiss scopes.  My sons have the other two Conquests and they are still using them after 8 years.  They are great scopes for the money.  You may be able to mount your 50mm objective with medium rings (depending upon your barrel taper).  This is if you use the Warne medium split rings with Warne bases.  My Weatherby Mark V has a Kahles 50mm objective lens scope on it and it fits just fine with about .060 inches clearance between the rings and barrel.  This is with Warne medium rings and mounts.  You may want to give this mounting combination a try instead of using high rings.  It works great for me on my Weatherby.
