I have finally been declared competent to own a firearm!!YippeeBig%20SmileHappy%20BirthdayWOW          I received the wonderfull news today.

This process has taken just short of 12 months. I have applied for the actual firearm lic 2 weeks ago, a process that could not be finalised untill I have my competency card, which I now have.
The firearm lic should take 6-weeks to 3 months, I am told. So by about mid June latest I hope to bring my baby home.

I still have not shot with the Rem700. The dealer who is holding the rifle for me has been too busy, but I am hoping we will go the week-end after Easter.

Jeesh 8, they could have skipped all the formalities and just asked us. I hate that you have to go through all of that nonsense. The BS that we have to put up with is too much as it is.
Congratulations are in order for sure though.......Super

No problems 1shot, once you have a lic firearm you can easily buy ammo for that caliber at any gunshop. We are restricted to not having more the 200 rounds per firearm though.
For reloading a person can also easily buy reloading stuff. One only need to produce the lic for the powder, again of which you may not store more the 2lbs.
I own a .3 caliber (30-06 and 300H&H) lic under the old system. So I have bought brass for the 308Win, powder for my 30-06 (wink wink) and .308 cal bullets and primers.
I put this all together and now I have 30-06 bullets that look uncannily just like a 308Win. I will try this in my 308Win, I am sure they will work!!
You must be a good shot with a name like that. I wish someday to graduate to 7shot!

Happy days 8shots, Glad you got permitted. I do not understand your difficulty. Big%20Grin Our media plays it up that all of the children in Africa are running around with RPGs and AKs., and you have such a hard time with a hunting rifle. Could there be discrimination in South Africa? Mouth%20Taped%20Shut

8shots I'm glad to see someone has got their compentcy. I have to put my licence renewal in by the 31st of March, I hope for your part it only takes 3 months for your new rifle licence to come, our Firearm Licencing Department at our S.A.P are not so optimistic as yours. Seen a few guys wait 2 years. Good luck with that.

Regards Chris

Congratulations 8 shots.  I sure you will be glad to get that Remington into your hands and put a few rounds threw the tube.  So, do you have to get a license for each firearm you purchase, or once you pass a competency test and have the license, you can buy what ever you want?

A competency card only declares you fit to own a firearm. You have to do separate tests for a rifle, handgun and shotgun. Once you have been declared fit, only then are you entitled to buy a firearm in that category. You then have to apply for a lic for each separate firearm, with a motivation why you need it. It would be difficult for example to justify two rifles of the same caliber and design, say two 308 Rem 700 VSF.

Thanks BigDaddy, I needed all the help I could muster. It was quite difficult finding anyone in South Africa to vouch for my sanity. So much appreciated.

No, the photo I submitted was with me in my Sunday best, in front of the church, holding a placard saying "Zuma for President".

Congratulations 8,
The card, does it mean you have been tested to be able to shoot or sane enough to own a firearm?  Some of US here might be able to pass the first but not the later!!!    LOL

Enjoy your new toy, I hope she shoots good for ya strait out of the box.

Jacob Zuma is a Zulu running for presidency in South Africa. He is currently on trial for corruption with the Germans over our multi billion rand arms deal. Despite this the ANC has just elected him as the ANC president. Next year we go to the polls the Zuma (if he is not jailed) will most likely be our next president. Hooray!!

The card means both. It means you have written and passed a test on the gunlaws and firearm usage, as well a shown an instructor how to care for the weapon and fire 10 rounds with a minimum score or better.
You further have to make certain declarations as to your state of mind. They then interview your wife (if you have one) and a close friend. All this is sent to Pretoria, evaluated and either you are declared fit or not.
The mental issue is to try and avoid lawsuits and or some crazy guy owning firearms.

Damn, that sucks.  I have 3 308s.  With people like Obama, we will be heading for that or worse.
