I was looking for some thoughts out there.  I currently own a Swarovski 6x42 PF scope and compared it to a friends Kahles 8x50 Helia Compact with an ill reticle last nite.  The FOV on paper is about 3 feet smaller on the Kahles 8x50, but when looking out the window, it didn't appear to be any smaller.  I looked at the specs for a Swarovski 8x50 as well and the numbers were roughly the same.

Why would a company make an 8x power that is close to the 6x in FOV?  What advantage is there for the 8x at this point?

In Europe, they do alot of hunting at night and the 8x50 will be slightly brighter or at least appear to be brighter do to the fact that the object you are viewing is closer with the higher magnification. This is only true if the scopes have the same exit pupil and have the same optical quality. In other words a 8x42 scope(if anyone made such a thing) would not appear as bright as a 6x42. You need the large objective lense to take advantage of the additional magnification. Hope that helps you out.

Zeiss & Schmidt & Bender both make a 7x50mm fixed power scope. Currently, neither scope exported here
