They are o.k.; they get the job done, but image quality is nothing special.  For $30- $50 more, I would get either the Zen Ray ED2 8X43 or Hawke Frontier ED instead (they are the same basic binocular).  Either of those will positively blow the Monarch away for not much more money.

 I will take your word on the clarity of the optics. However, until they have been out a few years I will stick to the proven names. Not saying they ain't good, just unproven.

You asked for opinions, you got one, and a great one....the Zen ED2s are fantastic.  The monarch's do not do justice to the great monarch riflescope name.   The Monarch binos are very avg at best.

Zen-ray has been around for a while now and has proven durable, The world renowned J. Barsness took them to Alaska last year and had nothing but praise for them.  I can't seem to locate his post about them.
