Got a Savage 114 7mm mag last year, and haven't touched it since then. Deer season is coming up, so I guess it's about time to get it ready to go. The problem is, I'm clueless on what scope to get, even after lots of research. I would like to stay in the 400-500 dollar range, because I probably won't use this rifle enough to justify spending more than that on a scope. I'm leaning towards a vortex viper, or maybe a Nikon monarch. I'm not set on either of these though, and I'm open to suggestions. Also, the bolt on this rifle seems to be too long for a scope to fit, so what rings and bases should I use?

I bought a Tikka T3 lite in 7 mag earlier this year.  I've been very happy with my Minox za3 3-9x40 with German #4 reticle so far.  Enough so, that I was actually on here looking to see if I could find another.

I'm using Talley LW rings in their low configuration.  With some googling when it was time for me to order, I was able to find all of the dimensions and calculations I needed to be able to make the ring height decision.

Im no expert, but for low light whitetail hunting I would go with:

Under $200 Mueller Sport Dot, Weaver 40/44
$200-300 Burris Fullfield 30 with 3p#4 reticle, Nikon Prostaff 5 with BDC Reticle
$300-400 Nikon Monarch with BDC Reticle, Minox ZA5 with German Reticle
$400-500 Zeiss Conquest, Meopta MeoPro #4 Reticle

You could get a one piece weaver/picatinny rail, or try a scope with a large mounting area and/or extended rings. If you keep the two piece bases, install them so that the grooves are nearest to the opening in the receiver to give yourself the most usable space. Ring height would be dependent upon the objective size of the scope you choose. And although I have never used them, I can't seem to hear enough good things about Burris Signature Rings.

Good luck!
