With the price of ammo now-a-days, is there someone or somewheres I can buy reloads? I've been to many gun shows and come up empty. ammo-to-go at all gun show I've been to and even online seems to be the cheapest for new 7.62x39 I have found. Who else sells cheap ammo?

the main problem is that .223 and 7.62x39 are so cheap its hard to reload them and make it worth the time

Not anymore.  I remember starting to reload x39 a year or so back and people dinging me due to Wolf being $2.25 a box and WWB/UMC 223 being $4 a box.

Not no more, lol!

You should see all the people buying 22LR conversions for their ARs or just parking their AKs in the closet.

ok lets do the math i know you will save money cause i cant think of much of anything to reload where you wont save money. one pound of powder= 7000 grs so we divide that by 24 which equals 291 so we will need 3 boxes of 150 gr .308 cal bullets and three cartons of primers so

1 # of powder                                         $20.00

3 boxes of .308 bullets (100 count)       $60.00

3 cartons of primers (100 count)            $10.00

                                                              $90.00 for 291 reloads

i go to c/a'b]e[l=a-s web page and they are selling boxes of 500 for $115.00 so are you really saving anything???

so lets do .223 for sh*ts and giggles as well

since the .223 and the 7.62 both use about the same amount of powder the only thing we gotta change is the price of the bullets themselves so

1# of powder                                      $20.00

3 boxes of .223 bullets (100 count)   $40.00

3 cartons of primers (100)         & nbsp;      $10.00

                                                          $70.00 for 291 reloads

got to the same web page and we get 250 for $75.00 so your really only getting 2 extra boxes for about the same money and there prices on ammo are ok but not the cheapest.

Hi,

Sorry, your math is off somewhat.

For example:  x39

Primers are about $2/100 w/tax

Powder down in the $15/# range buying an 8# jug (for loading a case/1000, lets say)

Tips are close to $7-$8/100 for the x39 too, not $20/100.

But you left out the brass, so there's a cost and x39 brass/brass isn't all that common, so you got me there!  Still, it's out there to find/buy easily enough and once found, can be reloaded a few times at least, if you can find it and if your AK didn't ding the crap out of it, like mine does.

You also left out s/h on your case of ammo.  Some guys will ship free (hidden cost) and I'll admit that Wolf is still reasonable, but not US/MilSurp 223/556 now.

Do you know that M855 is now going for ~$500-$600 before shipping for only 1000 rounds and that seems pretty reasonable in today's market.  Try and find cases of WWB/UMC 223 for under $-5-$6 a box plus tax, today.

All non-precious minerals are going up and lead is now not really being exported by China w/o heavy tarriffs, so brass and tips and even components in general (try and find a carton of Federal 210M LR match primers today.  Probably won't see them again 'til winter of '08.  Buy them up if you can and pad your 401K today!.  Couple this with record fuel prices and it's not good.

Just saying that 1.5 years ago, loading x39 was more for the love of it rather than any monetary savings.  Today, the gap is narrower.  Also, if all ammo you want to try out in your guns is Wolf or cheap Eastern Bloc ammo, then fine.  There's a good chance your weapon just won't prefer the fodder.  You'd be amazed at how many chi-chi and boutique loads I've made that on paper, should be a big bung hole, but are all over the map.  The only way to know for sure is to experiment and that choice is now down to precious few.

Just saying it's not kosher to be pegged into one brand of ammo and unless you reload, or have gobs of money, you ain't shooting all that much these days.

Take care, Chris

as far as primers go i used a round number for easy math i know they are cheaper plus i dont pay s&h i buy the stuff at a store that sells powder for $15 a pound but a lot of places sell powder for over $20.00 which is why i averaged it out. i dont need to figure in brass cause if im reloading it i obviously already have brass duh!, yeah i guess i missed the bullets by a mile i forgot they dont use .308 they use .311 my bad
