I am having a custom made AR in this cartridge. What are the hunting ranges you have used/be expected from it... I have been told it has tested real well for the military to replace 5.56???

Originally the round was designed as a real world alternative to the 5.56, especially for SOCOM.

I just finished a 6.8 SPC build myself (Bison Armory upper/Specialized Tac System lower). It's definitely more geared towards short-intermediate uses and was actually designed for use as a SBR (short barrel rifle) cartridge.

It's becoming a very popular hunting round, especially down south with hog hunters. To me it's a tremendous balance between a larger 30 caliber round (more recoil, less ammo) and the light hitting 5.56 variety (humane aspect comes into play on larger game).

You could get out to 500 or more yards with it, but generally i'd stay inside of 300 if using for hunting.

I haven't yet and it'll be a while for me (Semi auto is still illegal to hunt with up here in PA). I really put it together, at this time, for competition and plinking.

I'm HOPING to make it south sometime next year for a little LEGAL hunting action with it. We'll see how this year plays out.

Charles posts around these parts and i know he's a big fan of the 6.8 round. He's got a Wilson Combat stick i believe and would be a good person to talk with as i know he's posted some hunting pictures.

I wouldn't recommend >300 yard shots on game, the round peters out kinda fast.

For hogs, when shots are well placed, it is a good gun, plenty destructive.

You might also look at a 300 blackout, comparable power with supersonic loads and great fun with subsonic suppressed - if so inclined.

Either 6.8 or 300blk is far superior to 5.66 for hunting.
Downside: ammo is not as readily available for either caliber as for 5.55/223.

I prefer a bigger hit on game animals, but a well places shot would take a deer. Where it shines is on hogs, where distraction of meat isn't as big a concern.

And if you get a 6.8 SPC, make sure it is an SPC II, not the first gen chamber.

I have one and like it a lot.  Mine shoots very well with 110 Accubonds.  As Rancid said, make sure you get the SPCII chamber with 11 twist barrel.  I've killed a handful of hogs and 'yotes with mine (no deer yet).  No complaints.  It's also mild mannered enough that my 14 year old daughter loves to shoot it.  I think it's a good match for the AR15 platform.
