Weatherby just announced the 6.5-300 Weatherby Magnum. To debut in 2016. It's in Sporting Classics Daily.

They have a 257 now, seems an odd addition. But I do like 6.5mm.

I wonder if the new 6.5s are just a fad, or if the increased interest in long range shooting  has increased awareness of wind drift.

Oh, and someone tell Remington to make a LH 6.5 RSAUM Model Seven already.

Some 6.5s will survive. Others, probably not.

Not sure about the weatherby.

Like with other Weatherby calibers, the Weatherby name will carry the caliber. Even if the shells performance  doesn't make sense for the price.

Not many actually go away, Weatherbys usually survive after they've hit the market.  It is definitely a flat trajectory barnburner (and barrel burner)…
Maybe if the barrels get clad with a tantalum alloy… would increase life 5-10 times…
Probably not cost effective, but then not much about Weatherby stuff is… you don't buy cost effectiveness with Weatherby.

Yeah, I'm on their mailing list too! Most of their stuff comes off the belted 404 Jeffrey case if memory serves me. That thing has got to be a barrel burner!    Dang I want one!

I think I may want one…

$90.00 per box for Weatherby ammo would be cheap...

I have some 300 Weatherby Mag brass I could convert. I have guys at work that give me their brass. I reload some for them, others don't want it!

Gotta love folks that think it cheaper to just buy new all the time!

It might be cheaper to buy new, if you have to neck down a whole pound of powder per cartridge!

No problem - lots of US 869 and a 140 grain bullet!

I will struggle on with my 6.5-06(s), like I have been doing since 1966 but now I use H1000.

US 869 is easier to buy than H1000 - life is tough.

I drive a Honda.

Might have to check that out. I've been playing with a 257 wby for a couple of years now. Maybe time to step up a bit. Anyone seen any specs on this cartridge yet?

Wow. Could be interesting. Maybe each rifle comes with an extra barrel...

It may need it, but hey, nothing shoots flatter or kicks harder. Bandito

they had to come out with something to slow down the thunder nosler is drumming up with the .26&.28 nosler. the 6.5x.300wby is not by any means a new thing.. As a mass production caliber i guess it is....

Always found it curious that Weatherby skipped over the 6.5's. Guess I'm gonna have to go to the Weatherby site and drool around a little. Nothing against Nosler, but they just don't have the same cachet for me as Weatherby. (can't explain it...)

When you think about it, greater overbore cartridges can have an advantage when it comes to increased barrel life, because they can be loaded down to a lower pressure than lesser cartridges and still achieve higher velocities. .25-06 at max pressure vs .257 Weatherby at less pressure is a good example. The Weatherby is still quite a bit faster. Lower pressures mean longer barrel life.
Another trick for extending barrel life is to go with a faster powder than the powder which delivers maximum velocities. As in the .257 example above, one might give up 75 fps, or so, going from H1000 to H4350, but use ~15 grains less powder/round, which translates into increased barrel life.

Still, the main trick to longer barrel life is to not destroy the barrel at the range by overheating- that might mean only 3 shots with a serious overbore cartridge- then let it cool down. Proper cleaning and don't overheat 'em.
A friend had to re- barrel his new .243 after one day set up on a prairie dog town... never gave it a break until they ran out of daylight. A guy needs 3 or 4 rifles in a situation like that. Maybe 6- 10. Get a minivan and an assistant. "Quick, Leon-  the .225 Winchester with the Schnabel fore end."

Don't misunderstand, there's nothing wrong with always working your rifle around the upper edge. It's just that around here, the gunsmiths are all so covered up that it takes forever to get a new barrel fitted. That's also why some of us outfit ourselves with finish reamers and barrel vises and such. And plenty o' rifles.

Ps - cream o wheat or cornmeal still work for fire forming? Why yes, it does... no need to spend a bullet.

Do Mark V bolts still rattle? Best handling bolt rifle I ever had, but it was noisy to carry around.
