First post, and glad to be here.

I have had a 60s Kahles Helia 39 S2 with a #16 (tapered post German #4) and I love it. Although it weighs 1 lbs, the optics are brilliant and clear. The light gathering abilities are something to behold and it doesn't feel like your looking down a tube. Only complaint is the eye relief... And weight.

I spent some time looking for new optics to replace the heavy beast. Yet, nothing seems to satisfy. Has Kahles spoiled me? Or am I just used to it. I tried modern Luepolds VX-3s that are comparable in price and magnification to the vintage Helia. Yet, they feel cheap on comparison. It feels like I looking down a tube. Looking at the specs, the Helia is optically better than a Luepold. I thought "new" meant "better".

First, welcome to the OT.

"New" does not always, or even often, mean "better".  Finding "better" than Kahles is expensive and not without some effort.  Even a 60's version of Kahles is as good as or better than many scopes on the market today.  I have seen them go from $200-$500 in recent times.  Not much compares to the quality of materials and construction of your Kahles in that price range.
