Well, it's my opinion that you DO need an 80mm, no matter the quality.
I bought my favorite, the Swarovski HD 80mm, but there's some awesome scopes out there to function the way you're needing. I don't know how you're going to get that kind of resolution without going HD. The CA just bleeds the high contrast edges off of things that tiny and makes them difficult. When you look through the high dollar HD scopes, it gets the job done. At the store where I bought my Swarovski, they have a resolution sheet taped to the wall in the distance (big store) It becomes very clear (pun intended) what it takes to get the job done and how much money it'll take. I WANTED a Nikon 65mm field scope. It just wouldn't do the job. I bought a Swarovski non-HD and wanted to like it, it just wasn't worth the money. The CA was too much. When I look through my HD, it's amazing. There are a lot of contenders here. One scope though, and I'm not kidding, that was VERY good, particularly for the money, was the Bushnell 80 HD Excursion. It did a fantastic job. Being from China though, I just couldn't do it. I walked my anti-chicom walk and paid my dues. I'd almost got the Vortex HD, but figured, what the heck, I'm going to buy one of these to last me my days, I'll get the one I've had my eye on forever. Let us know what you get and how it performs!

Well, on good days any of the alphas will be fine. 80+MM is your best bet. I have used Kowa's, Leica's, and others and all are good. BUT!!!!, you are going to be lucky to see .22 cal holes at 300 yds. The mirage usually blurrs the target enough to keep you from seeing holes. There is no scope in the world that can move mirage out of the way. I shoot a LOT of Highpower rifle (Dist Rifle, P100, soon to be HM class) and I just call it a lucky day when I see holes in my 300 Rapids with any scope. Most of the time the only way the holes show themselves is when the person that just replaced the target center really gooped on the glue and the bullet really puckers the shot hole on the target. As a matter of fact, I only use my scope to check the wind on the mag change, just to make sure it hasn't changed. Learn to read the wind and you're scores will go up the way you want them to. Not trying to be a know it all, just trying to help.
