I live/ hunt in Alaska. I have recently purchased a 338 Remington Ultra Mag XCR2. I am excited to hunt with it. (I am having a brake put on it as well) This will be my all around rifle. Sheep, Moose, Bear, Caribou ect. There are plenty of opportunities to perhaps take a trophy at 4-800 yards. I am only confident now at the 3-400 yard range with my 3006 with a Luepold VX2 6-18.

I really like my scope...but wish that I had some more options. I have looked at the Mil Dot, versus the Nikon BDC, and a few other options. I primarily will hunt with this rifle... ie Target practice only enough to be proficient. (ie passion for hunting, not shooting)

I dont mind learning ballistics and Mil dot what ever stuff. But i do have a good range finder that I will use as well.

I like the Nikonhunting.com/spoton website...very cool. Great to get an estimate of where things are landing.

I am thinking of a scope 5-20 capability. clarity and light are important too. but zoom is very important to me.

What suggestions do you have? Thanks... we are limited on stores up here. So sportsman's warehouse is likely where I will purchase the scope, as I am off to a caribou hunt in 2 weeks and want enough time at the range first:)

if you order it from www.swfa.com you could have it in a day or two and still be cheaper than sportsmans, but i assume you want to look through the scopes before you buy one.

yes usually...and would they ship to alaska in a day or two...unfortunately we have different rules... most don't ship here for the same price or time as the lower 48. But really i want the best scope and would use my 3006 for this next hunt if I had a good reason to wait...ie better optics or awesome price. Just want some good suggestions.

I was leaning towards a BDC ... seems cool and perhaps practicle...but also think a mildot... I would actually learn that system...if its better i would go for it. I am not a rushing a shot type guy. I take my time and wait patiently and would do the math.

what do you suggest?

I'd look at the Sightron SII series.  You get a lot for your money IMHO.

You can do a lot better than the Sightron SII with 500 bucks.

I agree, the SII Big Sky's are very nice at that price point.

Vortex Viper 6.5-20X44 or 6.5-20X50 would serve you well. The only thing that would make me buy the 44mm one over the 50mm is that they don´t have the 50mm duplex on SALE!! If Target Dot Reticle works for your hunts I would definetly get the 6.5-20X50. If not, get the 6.5-20X44 V-Plex Wide. You can get any of those 2 for les than $300 here at SWFA. I own both and really like them.

I've only looked through the regular SII's.  I've heard the big sky is a step up optically, though.
