Swarovski used to make a 10x42 scope just for that purpose.  They can be found on Gunbroker from time to time.

All of the SWFA SS line is .50 BMG "qualified".  I currently have the 10xHD on my .50 and it is a fantastic combination.  I would take a look at the SS 5-20.  All of the SS line provides superior quality at a moderate price.  All the features required for long range, heavy duty shooting are present.

Hensoldt makes an excellent line of scopes, qualified for the .50.

+2   this is the SS10XHD. (not my rifle but I have put a few rounds down range and it is a very nice set up. i would opt for a little more power (5-20ss) but the 10xHD worked great out to 1,000. the more power is my style of shooting.

It's such a nice looking rifle and scope combo that it reminds me of the Princess of Darkness. Lets see, what was her name?

Bill I tend to think the fixed power scopes hold up the best.  I also think that a 50BMG needs more than a 10x scope.  If you have not tried one of the Super Sniper line of scopes you have missed.  SWFA SS 16x42 Tactical Riflescope  Stock # - SS16X42MQ  at just under $300 its hard to believe this would be as useful as it is and to get into something better you are looking at the 5-20x50 SS and next step up from there would be a U.S. Optics fixed   ST-17 or  ST-22 or one of their variables  and the absolute top of the pile is the Heinsoldt tactical Zeiss scopes.

I have a Nightforce on my 50 cal and it works very well. But I am thinking of putting a SS 16x on it since I do not get to shoot it as often as I would like. Ammo is at times hard to come by.

Putting the 16x SS on makes a lot of sense to me if you dont get much time on it that way you could put the NF on something you shoot more often.  With the weight of the rife and the cost of ammo the 50  really is a special purpose weapon system and unless you have a true need the cool factor can wear off when the price tag becomes reality.  One would think that the 50BMG rifles would be quite accurate but accuracy varies greatly depending on make and ammo quality.  The Barrett is probably about a 3moa rifle which means you better be shooting at something really big if its very far off.  The McMillan is more a sniper rifle as is the AI rifle.  I really think the trend will continue toward the .338 Lapua cartridge and that the ammo prices will become more affordable than what they have been for .338 LM

It is MUCH LESS expensive to shoot my .50 than to shoot my .338LM...

How so?  Do you get 50BMG ammo for free somewhere?

1911man,

Also look at the Sightron SIII line of scopes.  Starting to hear good things about them from fellow 50 shooters about them.  Nightforce, Leupold, Super Sniper scopes hold up well at fifty caliber matches.

To get the best accuracy form your fifty you will need to reload for it.

BTW what fifty do you have?

As of last October, 50BMG ammo was $3.00 a round for U.S. ball ammo.

Actually I'm not using it on a 50, rather a very lightweight .458 SOCOM carbine which has proven to be a scope killer..................

Currently have a Elcan Specter DR 1.5x/6x on it and seems to be holding up. Leupold is going to do a recoil trace on it and find out exactly what we're dealing with. I know it's a kicking little bugger from the bench!!!

What is said to destroy scopes on a fifty is the back and forward impulse from recoil and the muzzle break. With your rig it probably is recoil and the bolt slamming into battery.

The last 100 rounds of 50BMG I bought I paid 2.39/ round.  Cheapest I've ever gotten .338 is a gift, but buying ranges from 4.50-6.75/round.  So, the cheapest .338 so far is about double my price for 50BMG practice ammo.

i don't know how picky you are about what you put through it, but cabelas has some S&B stuffe for $3.50/rd

i don't have a 338lm so i don't know how good this stuff is.

why not just handload it?

Well, the questions were asked.
If you are looking for high quality at generally affordable prices, get the 5-20 SS if you are looking to go beyond 1000.  Designed to hold up to 50BMG.  The Hensoldt is also an excellent choice and designed for the rigors of battlefield use.  I'm actually considering getting a ZF6-24x72SAM.

Ammo will make a difference...
