Recently purchased my first .50 (gotta get one before further sales are prohibits, which IMHO is only a matter of time). So now I need a scope. Based on preliminary research it seems that the Nightforces are extremely popular with .50 shooters, but they're also pretty pricey. My preference would be to keep it under $700.
Right now I'm thinking about either going the cheap route and getting a 10X or 16X Super Sniper, or spending a little more and getting an fixed power IOR. Obviously I need something that's sturdy and can hold up to the recoil, has a reasonable amount of MOA adjustment, and has good quality optics.
Realistically most of my shooting is not going to be done at ultra-long ranges. Range a couple of miles from my house goes out to 300 yards. Another range I belong to is in the process of building a 600 yard range, but is less convenient for me to get to. Would definitely like to try my hand at longer ranges, but for now 75% of my shooting will probably be at 300 yards and under, and the remaining 25% at 600. This leads me to think I can get away with a 10X fixed scope, and that 16X will certainly be enough (even for my less than 20/20 eyes).
I own a couple of IOR's already and have been very impressed by the clarity of the optics and like the reticle. However, I've also heard great things about the Super Sniper and if I can get nearly as good performance for 1/2 the price, that would be pretty tempting.
On the other hand, if neither of these scopes is going to hold up to the recoil of a 50 I'd rather spend big bucks up front and get a very high quality scope, than to end up spending the same amount to buy a cheaper scope twice because I have to replace the first scope. |

Super Sniper is a great scope and would be the top choice if you want to stay in the $300-$400 range.
Comparison of Super Sniper with IOR is not entirely fair since IOR is a much more expensive scope. I think the adjustment accuracy of Super Sniper and toughness are as good as anything else out there, but its glass is not in the same league with IOR. Now, I would not expect it to be, at that price point. It really comes down to what is most important to you: your hard earned dollars or top notch optics, because mechanically both are very good. pippin you did some very good homework, yes the NIghtforce has been performing well for alot of .50 cal shooters but it is high in price for alot of people. Your choice of a fixed IOR is a very good cost saving alternative IMO with great quality glass. |

Don't know if the IOR will take the abuse or not. HAd one on a light 338 LM with no ill effect.
On the other hand......................................................
I have never broken a Super Sniper.
I have; Thrown one off a 50 foot tower......repeatedy and attached to a weapon.
Taken one scuba diving attached to my leg, in salt water.
Dragged one behind my truck down a gravel road. For a mile. Ok so I had the lense caps taped shut.
Banged one on a concrete bench to demonstate a; I'm abusive b: I trust these things c: to win $20.00 from the guy at the range who said they won't take abuse.
Beaten one with a hammer then finished shooting the 500 yard 3 inch five shot group. Why yes, now that you ask I can provide witness names for this little stunt
Worn one out from dialing firing solutions over a period of years.
I have never; Broken one.
Hope this helps,
