Howdy y'all. I found a really good deal on a new CZ 550 America Safari 458 Lott at Cabela's yesterday. It was the last CZ they had, they were closing them out and it was the display rifle. And it had pretty dang nice wood on it, too. In fact, the deal was so good I went back and got it today, notwithstanding I have no need for a 458 Lott. Oh well, that never stopped me before, either...

Now I'm trying to decide how/what to scope it with. All I read here leads me to believe the Lott routinely destroys any and all (almost) riflescopes. So I'm posing the question, who has scoped a Lott that the scope was not destroyed? I have an "extra" Leupold 1.75-6 VX-III in the safe, but if it won't live on the rifle I'd rather look elsewhere. Maybe the Conquest 1.8-5.5x38? Maybe the Leupy VX-3 1.5-5x28? Or what?

Kickboxer, sir, I have read about your Lott here on the board. Have you had any success with any riflescope on the beast?

Of course, I am assuming this rifle will kick me into New Mexico. Maybe, maybe not. But anyway, what are y'all having success with on really hard-kicking rifles?

Good shooting,

Texas

My Lott is scoped with a Pentax Gameseeker 4x.  When I phoned Leupold originally before putting a scope on it, the CS person told me that Leupold did not have a variable scope they recommended for that caliber.
I spoke to Pentax and the CS rep said they had specifically purchased a .458 Lott to test the 4x Gameseeker and it was still performing after several thousand rounds.  It was good enough for me.  I've found some ammo that works quite well with the BDC.
However, I recently moved the Pentax to a .458 WinMag.  The Lott is currently unscoped.  It performs very well for me with iron sights.
The Lott can certainly give you a mule kick if you let it, but my Ruger #1 is pretty tame.  I had one bad experience where I got "cocky", did not seat the butt on my shoulder, and it taught me a valuable lesson.  No problems since.  I love shooting it.  I've gone through a box of Hornady 500gr 2300fps Dangerous Game loads in one session and had no soreness from it.
If you get tired of the CZ, talk to me first...  Both my .458's are Ruger #1's. I really need a bolt gun.
There are a number of very good 4x scopes which will perform nicely on your rifle.  Some people say you only need 2.5x and I have considered it, but have no problems with 4x at close range.
Respect it, do not fear it.
The person I got mine from won it in a raffle ($25.00), but he was afraid to shoot it so I got a fantastic deal.

Thanks, Kb! Good to know about the Pentax. I don't think I'm afraid to shoot the Lott. I thought the 375H&H was supposed to be a hard kicker, but to me it's really a sweetheart of a rifle. In fact, the Lott compliments my 375H&H kinda nicely - one for plains game and one for large beasties! I am definitely ready for a trip to Africa now! I fully expect to try the Lott first on a whitetail deer, though. I like the idea, actually. You are kinda my hero in that respect! But I guess if it injures me too severely you get first crack at buying it. Anybody else out there shooting a 458 Lott want to chime in with more scope experiences?

Hey Kb, do you handload for yours? If you do I might need to "borrow" a pet load or something...

Regards,

Texas

I do not handload, but had some special deer hunting loads made up by Grizzly Ammo.  Some of the best shooting stuff I have ever fired.  It has a pleasant recoil (350gr roundnose bullet at 2000fps).  Very nice.  I've killed a couple with the DG loads, but they are not necessary.
I'll see if I can find the load data on those.  If not, give Mike Rintoul at Grizzly a call.  He is good.
