I know at this point at least one gift I'm getting for Christmas and that is going to be a Marlin 1895GBL 45-70.

If this is an old discussion, my apologies!

This will be a bear and whitetail hunting firearm.  My expectations would be 100-125 yards for
a long shot and 25-30 yards for short shots.  I need a scope under $250 with good eye relief, clear optics, good field of view, and a variable magnification of 1-4 and not exceed 2-7.   Any suggestions based on your experience?

Thanks,
Tim

I have 2 Marlin 1895's .. Fun guns ... In your budget I like the Bushnell Elite 2-7 .. Tough little scope with rainguard as an added advantage

I mounted a Leupold Var X III 1.5-5x on mine but that is out of the budget, but I like the Vortex Crossfire 2-7x scope.

My Guide Gun was hunted from a stand plus as a brush gun in the swamps of NC, so both eyes open capability was important.

What I like about the Vortex is that is has a very generous eye relief, which is important on the Guide Gun, particularly if you pair it Garrett's Hammerhead ammo.

I would step up to the vortex diamondback and pass on the crossfire.  better build and glass.

I would be looking at these:

Keep in mind that if you use full house loads, then the Bushnell Elite 2-7x32 and Vortex Diamondback 2-7x35 might be a bit short on eye relief.

Personally, I think less is more and I would be looking at scopes that top out at 4x or 5x for this application.

If it were me, I would stretch my budget just a little and get the Nikon Monarch 1-4x20 with the #4 reticle.  I think that is a perfect match for 45-70.

I actually added a couple of more to the list.

So based on two above and 5 in my previous post, how would you rank them
for that 45-70.

Thanks guys,

Tim

Leupold VX-1, Leupold Rifleman and Redfield Revolution are the same basic scope with different cosmetics.

If you like that scope, pick the one with the most visible reticle.

Personally, I would rank them in the following way:
1) Nikon Monarch 1-4x20 with #4 reticle
2) Vortex Diamondback 1.75-5x32
3) Redfield Revolution 2-7x33 with Accu range reticle

I have a couple of levers scoped for shorter distances, I like the Zeiss Conquest 3-9 x 40.  With my 45-70 I bought the XS sight system ghost ring irons.  No problem at 100 to 150 yards for large game and quicker, for me, for shorter shots.

Let just say for the price and with the opportunities I had to examine
some of the recommendations, so far the 2-7 Redfield Revolution has
been the one I like best.

Since I'll likely be ordering from the internet, what bases and ring size
would be correct for the Redfield scope?

Thanks,
Tim

I have the stainless version http://www.marlinfirearms.com/Firearms/bigbore/1895SBL.asp which has the scout type mount from XS systems that comes standard on the stainless gun.  I mounted an aimpoint 9000L with 2moa dot on the first one which my son now has and the second one has open sights for now but I am a big fan of the aimpoint on this rifle because it tends to be a defensive weapon after dark when in areas where there are large preditors.

If I didnt use the aimpoint I would probably stay with the scout style set up and use the Leupold scout scope to have the long eye relief.  I would probably use Warne Rings Probably the low rings but call SWFA (972) SCOPE-IT (972-726-7348)   and ask them.
