I have a custom H-S Precision 300 Win Mag. I have a Leupold Vari-X III 3.5 -10X50.
I am thinking about purchasing a Bushnell 4200 Tactical 6-24X50 for the rifle. Is this a good swap? Should I stay with the Leupold?Sharp Shooter

You will be really impressed with the quality of the glass in the 4200 however If this is a hunting or tactical rig I would suggest the 4-16x40.  What you gain going to 50mm is the scope looks brighter on one higher power -- like  40 will look bright at 6x and 50 will look bright at 7x but what you may be giving up in cheekweld can be significant in terms of accuracy at long range.  Do you have a tactical need for true tactical knobs as Leupold scopes in the VX3 line can be custom ordered with M1 tactical or Target knobs.  If it's sole purpose is target the answer is a little different than if its a tactical or hunting gun.  Daylight target shooters do use some very high power scopes.

The 4200 has somewhat limited elevation adjustments, just FYI.

300WM has a long reach, you might need more elevation to get "out there."

You are correct the 4200 does fall short on elevation adjustment and I should sale the 3.5-10x 50 Leupold thats on it now and purchase  another Leupold with more power for the 300WM or just keep the 3.5-10x 50 Leupold on it. Thanks for the input. Hammer

I'd say use the samplelist trade in form and trade it in.  Leupold is making some VX3 with "Custom Dial System"   The  elevation knob has BDC marks  1 for 100 yds 2 for 200 yds 3 for 300 yds and so on.  You dial in the distance with knobs custom engraved to batch the exact bullet brand and weight that you want to shoot. With this system you no longer have to be at the highest power like you do with balistic reticles. This works at any power so when it gets dark and you dial down to 6x you can set it on #4 and be dead on at 400 yds.
This is the smartest think that any of the manufacturers has done to help compensate for long range shooting.   The 30 mm tubes have more adjustment but here is one with a 1 inch tube and I really like the 4.5-14x40 this should be an awesome scope for hunting out to about 600 yds.  If you needed to go past that you would want the 30mm tube.

all depends on what your going to use it for. if you want a precision long range rifle that the 4200 would be well suited for then i would say no because i would want something with matched MIL/MIL or MOA/MOA knobs, not mixed with MOA knobs and MIL reticle, thats just... retarded.

If I put a 20moa base on the rifle should be enough to get me to a 1,000 yds with the 4200?

you still havnt said what your using the rifle for? what kind of HSP is the rifle, a HTR, or a hunting type? a 20MOA base on the 300WM would get you to 1K but the scope would still be FAR from my first choice. it has MOA knobs and a MIL reticle, and too much magnification IMO.

Look into the 6500 Elites. How about the IOR line? Both are very good glass. Of course there's nothing wrong with the Leupold since you already own that one.

I think maybe I should just keep my Leupold 3.5 -10 on this long range beast. I think I may just keep a look out for a Leupold 4-14. Thanks for all the input. Big Smile

I'd call SWFA and order one of the new "CUSTOM DIAL SYSTEM" scopes in the  4.5-14x40 but I think I would ask them about getting one with the 30mm tube which has more internal adjustment. http://www.opticstalk.com/forum_posts.asp?tid=16914

One other thing to think about with a 300 Mag is eye relief! When I go up to the highest power for those long range shots I tend to get a little closer to the scope to see, then whack, right between the eyes. I think the leupold has better eye relief and I think you can get a rubber bumper eyepiece. Now the 6500 is supposed to have good relief and a rubber bumper!

I was able to spend some time with the 6500 4.5-30 tactical yesterday.  I really like it a lot more than the 4200's.  No input on durability, repeatability, etc.  But, without shooting with it, I REALLY like it. The knobs felt firm and precise, focus is quick/easy, has a good "feel" to it.  It is now on my list of "things I want".  I like the 4200's OK, just never enough to want to buy one... I've used a couple that belong to friends and they do perform well.  Unless something else comes along that just "knocks my socks off", there is probably a 6500 in my future.  More money, a lot more scope.  If I had one, I may never use the top end, except for targets, but it's there if one needs, OR wants, it.
