There are pretty good reviews of Celestron Regal EDs around the $400 mark.  Also there are some closeouts of Vortex Skyline EDs in that price range as well.

Look at the Theron Saker.  ED glass and the whole nine yards, for $225.  I usually don't post about that I have not used, but there are a couple of reviews from people I have some faith in that rate it pretty highly.  That way you can use th extra money on a good tripod.

Ditto on both the Celestron Regal 65 F-ED and the Theron Saker. I have owned both and would certainly place them higher than anything else in their respective price ranges ($380 and $225 respectively).
