this scope?

http://www.riflescopes.com/products/AC10772/new_barska_3-12x 40_tactical_rifle_scope.htm

I am asking because I am thinking of getting my son a Savage 10FP in .223 or .308 (he is not ready for the 300 win mag yet)

and I simply don't plan on spending more than this for a scope for him,

I am planning on buying good glass for my 110FP and his scope will not be cutting into my scope's budget by more than 150$

and

it has mil dots, first focal plane so they are same at all magnifications

it is variable

it has side focus

so he can play around with mag, focus, estimate range, etc.

with a budget priced scope

I am asking if anyone has actually used one because I have had bad luck with inexpensive scopes

(BEC 3x9 rubber armored with reticle failure on a .308,

leapers acushot 6x reticle failure on a .308,

etc. etc.)

and I do not want a repeat.

now, most of these inexpensive scopes were 30 to 75$ range, so I guess you could call them "super budget"

I know nothing about the Barska company or anything either.

I can handle that it won't have the quality optical grade of a nikon, SS, or leupold.

I just want it to work.

any information appreciated.

Just my thought on this but I'd say if you are going to buy a cheap scope go to Wally World and for $29.95 you can get a 3-9 Tasco this will work for him until you can save up enough to spend $299 on a Super Sniper or $449 on an IOR 6x42  or one of the more expensive Tactical scopes, possibly as a Christmas present or something. Definately buy the .308 rather than the .223 and the Savage 10FP in the 20 inch barrel is a great choice I have one that I use all the time. Most states wont let you hunt deer with .223 if they allow rifles and if you shoot distance the .223 is not as good of a choice - the wind blows it around more than .308

What sort of problems did you experience with the BEC scope? I just bought one on ebay, I thought it was a pretty good deal for $35. I was going to put it one a 300 weatherby mag, but after reading your post, I'm not so sure. Any help you can lend would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

For the same money as that Barska crap you can get a Sightron S1 3-9x40 with a MilDot which is a pretty durable scope with decent glass for the money.
