I have narrowed my scope choice down to the new Monarch line. I was planning on the 3x12x42 but not sure if there is any real advantage over the 4x16x42. I never turn my 3x9 all the way down to 3 and the 16 may come in handy shooting groups. Would the scopes be equally bright on the same power, say 7 to 9 or will the 3x12 be brighter?

Coach, you are correct in your assumtion that the scope will be equally bright at equal power levels.  As far as choosing between the two, its kind of a toss up seeing they are very simular in power.  If you feel that the 4-16 will fit your needs better, that is what you should get.  The Nikon Monarch is a fine scope and I think you'll be pleased with either of your choices above.

I agree with LT. There isn't enough difference between the two in power. Same glass, and at the lower powers they will look and perform identically at like power settings. Neither scope is going to do well past the 8 power in low light. The good news is that they both have an 8 power and lower for lowlight. The important thing is for low light use what reticle you plan to get.
