Just got a 1985 39a and happened into some shorts at a garage sale on the same day.

This one likes the shorts and the open sights. It happens to be cci max mag shorts. It shoots them wonderfully with the open sights for anything I would seem to use shorts for like a garden pest or a close up tree rat. It has the flip down rear sight. I never really shot shorts before but can see that they have a niche place in this gun that no other round can fill.

I purchased a 1894 limited in 44 mag and got a scout scope and warne quick detach rings with the skinner low pro. I was surprised by the groups I was able to pull off with detaching the rings and shooting one taking it off and putting it on and shooting another. It seemed to shoot as well as I could and did not see any change of impact on the targets. I was really surprised at the fact that they did what they were advertised to do so well. The one thing I did not like and the only thing is that they were very heavy.

I got to thinking that since she shoots the shorts with the open sights so well and I had good results with the detachable rings on the 1894 maybe a scope that was semi quick detachable (An Allen wrench or screwdriver would be OK I don't like the big circle rings you can take off with a coin) with a Leopold 2-7 28 rim fire scope was the way to go. Sighted in with whichever long rifle ammo was the best grouping for the task. I looked at some type of Leopold Quick detach stuff but they only seem to have a 336 and 1885 setup listed not model 39 stuff. Would this be the same as the 336 one I have no 336 to compare to. If I got 2 sets of rings I could then add a second scope say in the 6-24 power range on higher rings if I wanted to do some other stuff that the normal 2-7 would not do as well.

Seems that this would be a winner on a couple of farm areas I hunt that don't like but put up with my rim fire noise and most shorts will not shoot through the metal roofs of a lot of barns I shoot coons in for the local horse farmers in the area.

Just three question to asks the experts here.

Does anyone have a setup like this on a 39a?

What base would be short enough in height to see the rear ramp with the base attached and the base still look very nice on the gun when not wearing a scope? Some mounts look very unsightly without a scope on a 39a. I think there are some out there that would look better than others.

What rings could I get that would be semi quick detachable yet return to the zero of a tree rat head if you took them off and then put them back on on a accurate 22 rim fire? I would like to mount as low as possible on the 28 mm scope and just flip the sight down with the scope mounted.

The 1894 is a brush/swamp gun so I don't need tree rat head accuracy. I would always be able to test this scope setup between changes from unscoped to scoped configuration. Where as with the 1894 in the deer woods I might not be able to each time at risk of firing off a round and spooking animals.

I don't believe the 54229 fits your rifle. Leo doesn't appear to make bases for the 39A.
Weaver does:
Your choice of rings and scopes is large with these bases.
A search of Talley, Burris and Warne showed no 39A bases either.
