I have used the 3-9x42 in low light for hunting. It is no problem to use past legal light on overcast days.
There are no color issues, very neutral. The edge to edge clarity is also very good. It compares more closely to alpha class scopes than to other mid-range scopes I use.
I haven't touched the HD. But folks here say the optics are very "crisp".

I have the 10X HD & it is as tahqua states, crisp, clean & very easy on the eyes. There is no abberation that I can see, hence the great clarity at just about any time of the day.

At the same magnification (or close), 10x42HD has an edge.  However, when it gets really dark, dialing the 3-9x42 down to abut 6x or 7x, gives it an edge over the fixed power 10x42HD.

Thank you for the insight...

I do own the 10xHD it has done everything I have been told.  I wish it were a little brighter and the 10x seems a little weaker than a few other 10x's I have I do not know exactly why this is but Magnification is about 9 or a little more...

I am sure it is 10x or the other glass is metric 10x (j/k)...
