Im going to buy a new scope soon, and I'm narrowing my choices to a Zeiss Conquest 3.5-10x44 or a leupold VX-111 3.5-10x40. But my question has to with the numbers. Both Zeiss and leupold offer models with either 3-9x40 or 3.5-10x40 whats the difference between the two? Also has anybody had expeirence with Zeiss Conquest and the VX-111 and if so which scope do they like better?

Zeiss Conquest

-Etched reticle

-Fixed eye relief

-Better glass, IMO(Nothing wrong with the VX. It's good too.)

-Fast focus eye piece

-Better reticle w/ the Z Plex. This reticle is just about perfect for me.

(Leupolds fine duplex is too fine for my eyes.)

The VXIII MAY be a little lighter though. The Conquest is on the heavy side.

Both scopes are good. But, I give the Conquest the edge.

Only difference between the 3-9 and 3.5-10 is the obvious power range.  Zeiss offers a 3.5-10 as do many companies because Leupold has used this number for so long that it has become synonymous with quality.  Believe it or not a 3-9 does not sell as good and is not thought to be as good as a 3.5-10.  It all goes back to the Vari X-II and Vari X-III days, when everyone knew that the Leupold Vari X-II 3-9 was not as good as the Vari X-III 3.5-10.

Pure marketing, no difference in quality in the Zeiss Conquest line.

Here are a few reasons to buy the Zeiss Conquest 3-9x40 over the Leupold VX-III 3.5-10x40 (which is the closest comparable Leupold).

The Zeiss Conquest scopes all have a constant eye relief (4" on the 3-9x40), meaning that your head position can remain constant through out the entire power range. They are built from extremely durable yet light one piece aluminum tubes (15 ounces on the 3-9x40). Precise windage and elevation adjustments can be made with out the use of a tool. All Conquest feature finger adjustable windage and elevation with a square range of adjustment. This offsets the reticle's natural tendency to follow a curving path and also allows for maximum range of adjustment (a whopping 64" of adjustment in the 3-9x40). Six different glass etched reticles are available, including a turkey 57, mil-dot and proprietary ZRF range finding reticle (ZRF not available in the 3-9x40). All models also feature the very handy "European style" fast focus eye piece. Side focus parallax adjustment is standard on 4.5-14x44. Wide field of view ranges from 11.0' - 34.0' at 100 yards on the 3-9x40. Finely ground and polished lenses ensure that every 3-9 is actually 3x - 9x. To achieve maximum light transmission Zeiss fully multi-coats both sides of all lens surfaces with their proprietary coatings and they even go as far as to eliminate the use of any lubricants internally to keep down the possibility of reflecting any stray light. Conquest are water-proof (submersible) with or without their adjustment caps. Increased mounting area of 6 inches makes mounting on long actions easier and gives you more versatility for proper eye relief. Full lifetime warranty regardless of who ones it, if it has the Zeiss name on it, then it has a lifetime warranty.

Leupold 3.5-10x40
10.7' - 29.5' at 100 yards (4.5' less than the Conquest)
3.6" - 4.6" eye relief (a full inch difference from 3.5x - 10x)
3.3 - 9.7 actual magnification
51" maximum adjustment (13" short of the Zeiss)
13 ounces (2 ounces lighter than the Zeiss)
4 different reticles available in the 1" 3.5-10x40 (1 less than Zeiss)
5.75" maximum ring spacing (.25" less than the Zeiss)
Lifetime transferable warranty (same as Zeiss)
$469.95 for the Leupold ($20.00 more than the Zeiss)

Kinda makes you think that Zeiss knew who their competition was prior to making and marketing the Conquest huh?  Funny thing is, Zeiss' competition at the time laughed at them for marketing two drastically different product lines.  They thought that the Zeiss name and reputation would be damaged beyond repair.  The smart one was Zeiss to understand who their competition really was and launch a scope that would successfully compete against the big L.
