Hi guys,
as I even wanted to start with long range shooting, I finally decided and saved some cash and bought Savage Axis II Precision rifle. But as this is the place to discuss optics side of long range I would appreciate any advice on my current setup. My friend is gunsmith doing it for a living and through his distributor he managed to get me Vector Continental 34 mm 5-30x56 FFP scope. I'd like to stop here for a bit, because I will kindly appreciate pure technical opinion without politics (and god I don't like China, communism and all things going on now, lived in that ages for a while as I'm from Czechia) So know it's China, gun/optics quality and price ratio, expecting being lynched for such an decision,.... I don't want to start a discussion about scope itself, I'm totally satisfied with it, but I'm newbie at this, so It's pointles to make some statements.

Anyways, to the point: scope shipps with high rings which I tossed away coz I could't zero my rifle on 100 meters with those lacking sufficient adjustment range on 20 MOA mount. Solved it logically by getting low rings, same manufacturer, china Vector, for like 15 dollars each. Scope was around 800 dollars coz I bought it without local tax. Normally it's 21% more expensive. Does it make sense to buy better rings/mount regarding all the facts I stated in favor of overall performance ? (holding zero, quality of material, influence on precision etc.) Sorry I do feel question could be stupid for you in various ways, but I'm just at the beginning, hope you will consider that for my good :D Thanks in advance for any comments, dislikes, recomendations...anything basically. Have a nice weekend.
Best,
Teodor

Given you are just entering this discipline.... if you can zero at 100 and the rings are solid i'm inclined to tell you to shoot for a while and upgrade later if you do desire.

I recently picked up a axis p ii in 223.  Held .75 moa out to 600y

I recently put a vortex strike eagle (34MM) in sig sauer 34mm rings on a FN A5 and they have been rock solid.

if you do upgrade the rings I can say I have been happy with those.

No matter how nice the scope is (and Vector Continental from what I heard is a decent scope, but I have not tested it myself), if the rings are not straight, it is all pointless.

If you could not zero the scope with high rings at 100 meters, the rings were not straight.  When you changed to lower rings, you were able to zero not because they are lower, but because they are not as screwed up as your high rings were.

Now, if with the current scope and rings you are properly zeroed and the scope tracks, do not change anything.  If you start having issues, change the rings to something better and see if it makes a difference.

Hello again,
I'd like to have one more question. After almost a day of doing research on the internet and because US products, or better said shipping of those, is very limited to EU, not speaking about Czechia, I haven't found answer to another idea I have. I was thinking about replacing Savage Axis stock mount base (which is really crap - we measured it with caliper with my friend), with either better aluminium one, or steel. But there are basically no available stuff in reasonable price range (even there are very few) for my rifle. Is it possible to use mount base rail for another rifle? I believe I understood there should be a plenty of those with same screw holes distances etc. If yes, does it make sense to do? Another problem, which is very frustrating - I could have quite good steel base for my rifle, but another problem occurs. Savage as US company logically use inch dimensions and thread on screws, in Central Europe everything is metric. So It doesn't seem that I could even get screws for this one. Ofc the original ones, or ones like EGW mount specifically made for Savage could solve it, but those are not available, as everything basically. I could have my rifle's threads drilled to metric, or request somebody to make me these screws like custom order but I would be up for more simpler and safer solution tbh. Any ideas on this? Thanks a lot in advance!

It is difficult to find a base from another rifle that will be a perfect fit.

If you want to make a project out of it, you can probably get a high quality blank picatinny rail, re-drill the receiver holes into a larger metric size and epoxy bed in place for minimal stress.  However, by the time you are done with all that, it might be easier to just pay for the shipping.

Yeah that drilling and other modifications would be probably the only possible way. Cause It's not about shipping time itself, but the fact it's considered as dangerous "weapon" material, so it's practically banned for individuals. You can order through brownells for example, but their franchise here in CZ is extremely unrealiable, and often scammy.
