I recently bought a 338 Ultra Mag and am in need of putting a scope on it.  Does anyone have any suggestions on a scope.  I am looking for the best scope for the price.  I am not afraid to spend money as long as its worth it.  I will be using the gun for hunting Elk in the Rockies.

Price Range:  300.00-800.00

Distance: 100yds-500yds

Thanks

my first suggestion to you is to make sure the scope you buy has good eye relief, that cannons got some punch when squeezed. zeiss kahles would be my first choices.

I would suggest Kahles also.  I think either the 2-7x36 or 3-9x42 would be ideal.  Anything  heavier and you'll be sorry at the end of the day.  Anything with a larger objective or with more magnification is just unnecessary.

I would also tell you to consider a 6x fixed scope.  You'll get better optics for the money than in a variable and it would be enough power for you when shooting a big animal.

338 Ultramag--what a boomer- I have a  Browning 300 Ulltramag topped with a 2.5x10 4200 Elite and it's performed perfectly. I think any good quality scope in that magnification range would be ideal.

In your price range take a look at IOR. These are very good scopes for the money. Ask some of the experts on here about them.

Damn, that should not only kill the elk, but maybe skin it too.  If you were to take a "Texas heart shot" up the pooper, you might just turn the thing inside-out!

Whatever you get, invest in good mounts and rings.  You're gonna need them!

I am thinking by the response from everyone going with a Zeiss.  Does Zeiss have good eye relief?  Also any suggestions on the bases and rings?

I'll second the Talley mounts. Ditto on a Conquest 3-9 and look at the 4200 3-9x40. It is a very good scope and it won't weigh your rifle or wallet down.

3.3 inches of relief for the 4200 4inches for the conquest so is the extra .7 of an inch worth $140 bucks?

That eye relief may come in handy. Stitches cost more than $140.

Will the 4200 withstand the recoil and remain accurate??  I am taking this beast hunting in Alaska and need something that is tough and can withstand the elements.  I will be gone for 2 weeks and wont have the luxery of taking it back to the store for a refund or having to resight it in.  I have never had such a tough time determing what I should put on a gun in my life.

My buddy has a Burris on his.Performed flawlessly for going on third year.He really likes the drop compensating reticle for those extra long shots.Personally I would go with a Leupold(Thats right) due to their toughness and dependability to say nothing of the best warranty in the business.(You just never know)

Good Luck,

Rock

I would go with a conquest scope, that said I believe I would opt for the 3.5x10x44 instead of the 4.5x14x44. The 10x is plenty for your hunting and its more at home being drug around thru the puckerbrush, no AO adjustment to get moved. The 3.5x10 is lighter than the 4.5x14 and less money also. I own and use both models and believe you will be well served by the conquest scopes.........if you do a little shopping the 4.5x14 was $586 to my door last month, and the 3.5x10 should be around $480-490. As a side note...........the 3x9x40 conquest is on sale right now for $399 and will also do an excellant job, its the only one mentioned with a true 4" of eye relief, the other conquests have about 3.5". Hope this helped.......good hunting!
