..........................My friend does! But his rifle is the Ruger Frontier stainless compact! I happen to do the reloading for his 338 Federal!...... We have gone on pig hunts together and it is quite impressive. He has also taken a moose and an elk with it............. Wonderful cartridge!!

................Yep!............After the cases are disgarded, he and I always buy factory ammo anyway to keep on hand to use as beginning fouler shots before group and velocity measurements are taken! In very few cases though, the quality of new brass leaves alot to be desired..................338 Fed. ammo is plentiful. Don`t let the non-availability of new brass stop you from owning that cartridge.

...........................Take the difference between the cost of brass (per 20) vs. the cost of factory ammo (per 20)!..........With the 338 Federal you should get a minimum of 4 to 6 reloads for the factory cases, if you don`t load to max.....You should always keep some factory ammo laying around anyway for the fouling shots!

...........................I`d go with the lower X in matte black, rather than over scope that rifle in gun metal grey!! If it is $500 for the 3.5x10 (grey), how much would it be to custom up the 1.75x6??.................You`d better call Leupold directly! If the difference between the two is minimal then go with the custom 1.75x6 in grey!!

the scopes are all the same $399.99 and its $100 for the special finish color so they all cost the same amount according to the custom shop web page.

I am not seeing the point of this caliber.  Why not just load up a .308 with a 200 gr bullet and  get a rifle with a 1-10" twist?

good point but why not??? gun makers are there to sell guns to people like me who want to try something new, i wont be using a 200 gr bullet in it anyway, so really in my case i would be better off buying a .308 and just loading  the 180gr bullets in it .

I guess I just think all these new calibers are a waste of money for the most part.  If you are going to shoot 180 grainer's then you will be shooting a shorter fatter bullet that will not fly near as good as a 180 30 cal bullet.
But as I said just my opinion, I am not big on having tons of different calibers and tons of rifles.  I like to spend my time and money on the ones I have and learn to run them very well.

the .338's bc and sectional density are better than that of the .308 is the adavantage, the 180gr in the .338 fed is neck and neck at 200yds with the same 180gr bullet in a 30-06 at 400yds the .338 really shines compared to the 30-06

Not with a 180 grain bullet.  If it is nosler accubonds you are looking at the .338 has a Bc of .372 and a sd or .225.  A .30 cal nosler has a BC of .507 and a sd of .271.

The only advantage I can see in the .338 is if you wanted to shoot much heavier bullets for larger close range game.

i stand corrected on the b.c and s.d but the perfomance doesnt lie, at 200yds they are neck and neck

So I guess that brings me back to my original point.  What do you gain other than it will probably cost more to feed it.

But in the end I can't really argue if you just want a new toy, definitely nothing wrong with that.

A 250 gr .338 has to eat up valuable powder space in a .308 case.
Ditto on the 180 .338/.308 comparison. I would err on the side of penetration and aerodynamics with the .308. I don't feel this caliber is a solution to any existing problem.
The .06 case is a far better candidate for a .338 pill. The Win Mag even better.
