So, i have it narrowed to the 1.8-5.5x38mm Conquest or the 2.5-8x32mm Conquest.
Which would you put on a lightweight short action 200 yard rifle? Shots may be 20 yards, or may be 200, possibly in poor light. Is 5x38 sufficient power for a 200 yard shot? Then again, is 6x32 or 7x32 bright enough for morning or evening?
By the way, swfa.com and zeiss.com list different weights for the 38 mm tube, and i am guessing that the swfa site has an error.

.......Of the two Conquests, for a lightweight short action, I`d go with the 2.5-8x32. It would look better on your rifle. That 1.8-5.5x38 for such a low variable,, is big. It`s even larger and heavier than alot of higher powered variables.

The 2x to 3x`s alone, are very sufficient for a 200 yard kill shot!

Don`t know what cartridge your using, but a 2.5x8 is very sufficient for any 270, 7mm, or  30, even out to 500-600 yards.

Like Big Squeeze said; 3 to 4 power is plenty for 200 yard shots.  If you had a 32mm objective lens you would still have a 7mm exit pupil ( which is brightest that the human eye can USE anyway...)  at 4.5X.  Plenty of light gathering there.....especially in the Zeiss Conquest which is a very nice scope.

Plus 2 on the 2.5-8x32, I think it offers alittle more flexability.

My thread "fixed power vs. vari power was shut down for some reason, and I could not get any more advise on my scope and then I saw this posting. I do like the idea of the variable power in lower settings. If I was to consider the Zeiss Conquest for my .308, would there be much of a difference on the optics between the fixed 4X and the 2.5-8X32 other then the fact I could turn it up or down?

Dale,
Not a problem. I read everything on that thread and understand why it had to be shut down. I only hope I can still find an answer to my problem with deciding on a scope. Not trying to hijack this thread. I will continue to read and learn from this thread and maybe get my answers as well.

2.5-8x32 would probably be a better way to go for a light weight rifle.

Some other choices:
Nikon Monarch 2-8x32
Vortex Viper 2-7x32
Kahles 2-7x36 (more expensive, but as good as it gets among the tweener scopes)
