If the accuracy experiment using the Bushnell 3200 Elite 10x40 Tactical mildot on my NDM-86 Dragunov goes well then I'll be looking at modifying the mount to accept std 30mm rings so I can use really decent optics. My biggest concern is how well the Drag's QD mount system will return to/hold zero. I'm not current LE or military so use will be strictly range work out to 900yds (ie: 168gr goes subsonic). I'll pay what I need to get what I want but I don't want to pay for premium optics if the rifle/mount setup won't benefit from it. What I would *like* is variable power up to 9x/10x, Gen 2 mildot or MP-8 mil line reticle (std mildot minimum but I range more accurately w/Gen 2 or MP-8), 1/2 moa adjustments w/BDC (ala M3) but 1/4 moa adjustments acceptable, 42mm or smaller objective lens, AO (preferably side turret), rugged w/good glass & tracking/repeatability. Reticle illumination would be nice but not required.

Current short list (I'm open to other suggestions):

Tasco SS 10x42. Pros: Good reviews, good price, AO (is the side turret focus worth the extra $100?). Cons: Fixed power, std mildots, 1/4 moa adjustments, no BDC. $300/$400 (std AO/side focus).

IOR 2.5-10x42 Tactical. Pros: Good reviews, MP-8 mil line reticle, illuminated version available, 1/2 moa adjustments, variable power. Cons: No BDC, no AO. $560/$600 (non-illminated/illuminated).

Leupold Mk-IV 3.5-10 M3 w/PR's Gen 2 mildot reticle. Pros: It's a Loopy! Has everything I want except for illuminated reticle (minor). Cons: Price ($888!)

All suggestions/input welcome. Thx!...

Tomac

If you don't mind spending a good chunk of money for the best optics then  I will reccomend the Schmidt&Bender Police/Marksman 3x12x50 or the NightForce line of scopes. The NightForce scopes are extremly heavy for a riflescope though. For a great medium priced scope I would reccomend the Zeiss Conquest in one of the higher magnafication ranges or a Leupold Mark IV scope. The Mark IV is a fixed power scope, and the others I recommended are variable powered.

Thx for the suggestions! Unfortunately the S&B & Nightforce scopes (while excellent) would kill my budget and have objectives greater than my requirement of 42mm. The Zeiss Conquest line only has 1" tubes (& objectives that are too large), unfortunately, making it unlikely they have enough crank to reach 900yds w/my mount setup. The Loopy Mk-IV 3.5-10x42 M3 is about as expensive as I can go but is that overkill for my needs?

I would stick with either the Leupold mark 4 or the Super Sniper great scopes for the money.
