I am looking for a .308 tactical scope with bdc or a elevation knob which does the one revolution to 1000 yds thing -

Know of the leupold mk4 with M3 knobs, it's what I am leaning toward (wish they did it in a 3-15 type instead of the x10 max). Prefer calibration for the standard 168 g federal.  Have been reading individual sope specs to find others, but am going crazy doing it, I know someone here probably knows off the top of their head the  choices I have . I think springfield makes one that is just perfect (on the surface), but have read that their scopes are not worth buying, so it's a no. - I currently run a kahles fixed 10x on my rifle. Thanks!

Also, I have heard a bunch of people say for the bdc on the Leupold to work to 1000 yds, you need tapered scope mounts? Can anyone confirm/deny this?

US Optics offers a very nice EREK knob on it's SN-3 model that gives you a one turn revolution to 1000 yards. I had this scope, and I can HIGHLY recommend it.

That EREK knob may be available on other models as well.

Schmidt and Bender PMII has a one turn knob too, I believe.

I'm not real crazy about bullet drop commpensators.

The scope you want is already made, the VXIII M3 by
Leupold.

Kenton Industries can custom engrave a turret to your specs.

My only experience with USO was a $1700.00 scope that
spent more time in the shop than on my rifle.
Never was repaired and no replacement was offered,
although they did offer to sell me another unit and honor
the lifetime
warranty on that unit.

Go figure.

WOW, hate to hear that, Mike.

My experience with USO, and John Williams III in particular, is totally opposite of that.

Yeah, I was very pleased that JWIII would call when the
scope got there, call again when it was on the bench,
call again when it was re-assembled and call again with
the overnight tracking number.

He did this every week for a month, as I'd get the scope
back on a Friday, take it to the range on Saturday, and
overnight it to him on Monday. He's the one who said
they couldn't repair it, and he'd gladly sell me another
unit and warranty the new scope just like the old one.

I put a Supersniper 1042M scope on the rifle and have had
no problems since. That's been about 3-4 years now.

Wish it were otherwise because I really did like some of
the things they did with the ergonomics of that scope.

Is this the scope??

yes, That's it, the thread answered my questions - nice scope, but the different markings would be enough to mess me up - I can barely figure the mil - dots!

Mike, I didn't know you could get the var-III with the m3 elevation / bdc knob- is this a leupold thing or

a custom shop type thing - I always wished the mk4 LR scopes went above 10 x on the variable (the 4.5x14 would be ideal)....That would be great, especially with a mil dot or close type reticle - what other differences are there between the vari-III and the mk4?

Mike, sounds painful.

Why did USO not replace the original scope, since they couldn't repair it??

And then offered to warrenty a second scope, if you purchased it??

Strange.

Again, I dealt with USO on a slight issue and it went very smooth.

Sorry yours didn't.

I can understand the wish for a higher power M3 if you have never owned one. I happen to have the 10x M3 and an 8.5 to 25 M1 and I prefer the 8.5-25 while I do not have the 4.5 to 14  with M1 It is extremely popular and I would highly recommend it. Note the M3 dial drives most people nuts because you can not fine tune it - the elevation clicks are 1 MOA and windage are 1/2 moa where the M1 style clicks are 1/4 moa and will dial in nice and close. That said the M3 is a battlefield scope designed to engage multiple targets at various ranges out to about 1000 yds. It will put you close but if you have a little more time between shots you will be closer if you dial in the 1/4 moa clicks. Remember that 1moa at 600 yds is 6 inches - thats a lot of adjustment for one click. Now one other consideeration when Leupold says "Long Range" they mean it wont focus closer than 50 to 75 yds depending on which scope. In comparison the new Burris tactical scopes focus down much closer but 3-12 is not that much stronger than a 10 x. Solution buy the 8.5-25 Leupold Mark 4 with M1  1/4 moa and use it at 8.5 pretending it's a fixed 10 then when you want to look at something closer go to 25x its an awesome scope.

As for the 10x M3 you do not need plus MOA  type mounts to get to 1000 yds

As for the 8.5-25 M1 you do need plus 30 MOA  Badger and Medium High Badger rings to get to 1000 (but dont to get to about 800)

Not to call you out by any means, but a 30 moa rail seems like an awful lot for 1000 yds and a .308.

Doesn't that scope in particular have more built in lift than that?? Maybe I'm confused.....

I certainly approve of Badger rails and rings!!

Thanks..

HI again,

Just pppped in and read the latest.

I have most of the scopes in question and all are on
flat bases, most are on 308's including the MkIV M3 and
the MkIV M1 8.5-25. I have no problem with 1200 yards
with either.
Only way you'd need 30 moa ( and that much incline will
kill the erector tube spring in anyone's scope unless
your'e willing to leave the elevation at a higher than
100 yard zero) is with a marginal cartridge/load, or if
you were trying to do 1500 yards.

Be interested to know where your data came from and what
you're shooting in terms of bullet weight, velocity, and
elevation above sea level.
