Was able to spend the entire day with friends on the 1000 yard line.  3 guys, 4 308 winchester rifles.

1st, anyone says a Springfield M21 won't hit anything at distance is welcome to come be a target holder Big Smile  there's just nowhere to hide.
I remain amazed at the capabilites of this thing.

155 scenars group very well but the claimed bc is waaaaaaaaay  optomistic.
175 sierras wil keep up with the scenars if you can read mirage........ real well.

190 matchkings at 2650fps just kick ass. It's like you chambered a laser.
Had some spectators come up and watch.  One of my buddies put a 60 sumthin guy behind his rifle and coached the guy into a three shot 6 inch group centered on target at  1000 yards.  Damn I love that bullet.Bandito
We were so giuddy with the days accomplishments none of us remembered to stop for beer.

SB,
42.5 varget in a Hornady case.  1:11.25 twist 5 groove barrel in my bolt gun.
Gas gun shoots varget and 175's, 190s are just too abusive too for that platform.

Once I went to this style stock with adjustable ckeek and no drop at the heel I won/t have anything else.  It's like shooting my bolt rifle............but faster  :)

That's one from Turner Saddlery. 54 inch Full grain leather 1.2 wide with stitched keepers and riveted frogs.  All my decent rifles wear  them.

Mr. Mike, didn't you have a LRB M1A at one time?
Seems I remember drooling over the picture of it a time or two. Big Grin

I've thought about moving up to a heavier bullet but wonder if it will work well out of a 20" in a 1:12 twist. I mostly shoot 165-168s now over 44 gr. of Varget.

Just have to try them. My 1 in 12 twist, 26" barrel doesn't seem fond of any bullet over 168gr bullets.

factory barrels tend to be optomistic abot twist rates.  A remmy factory 1:12 tube might well be 1:13.5, tolerences are pretty loose.
I shoot up to 200 grain bullets from my pacNor but 190s are most accurate.

That 20 inch tube and heavy bullets isn't the best recipe for success.

That is an interesting statement about barrel length. I have read article after article pontifying (whatever that word means) the accuracy of a short barrel. Yet only the urban police and some combat guys have the shorter barrel. Everyone else says "a short barrel is just as accurate, but by the way I use a 26 inch barrel!"

a custom T/C or xp handgun in 10-14 inch will out shoot most rifles, not in the velocity department of course. If your using a heavy bullet and a twist rate on the margin of stability additional velocity by using a longer barrel can tip the balance in favor of accuracy. this discussion goes on and on about snub nose revolvers vs longer barrels being more accurate when in reality its the shooter in this case. unless one wants to take extra efforts everybody is pretty much at the mercy of gun makers preception of what will sell.

8, the shorter barrel will not decrease accuracy, but you do lose velocity for the same powder load/bullet.  Go here and read what the guys DOING it have to say:

Hi Kickboxer, I have read them all. Re-read my original statement.
The kicker Kickboxer (pardon the pun) is that after all of that is, other then those guys, everyone use a 26 inch barrel for varmint/target shooting!

I wanted to cut my barrel down, but no-one can come up with a convincing argument. Yes, you loose 80 to 150 ft per second, which is nothing etc, yes you can add a bit more powder etc, but somehow.....
Surely guys like Remington could save a fortune if they changed all their Varminters to say 22 inches. Every 6th rifle barrel would be free! But somehow for some reason.....
