so my latest build is a 308 AR with an 18" JP barrel, blah blah blah.

i've shot a lot of the big name, crazy high dollar scopes, but i don't have the $$ for that.

18" is a little on the short side for 1k+, but it will do it. so that's my range goal.

i have the SS 5-20, 3-9, PST 4-16, couple MK4's (that are getting sold), and recently bought a sightron si on closout, and was impressed.

so my limit will be @ or around $2k, so that puts up the Razor, SS, and the Steiner is close.

but i would like to consider something along the PST and SIII, but i beat the sh*t out of my stuff, and don't know if they will hold up. i've been easy with the PST up to this point, so i don't know about how rugged it is.

so since many of you know A LOT more than i do about scopes, hear it is.

and i've read all of koshkin's reviews, but i haven't made up my mind yet

thanks all

What is the purpose of the rifle, hunting, target or competitive distance? Illuminated or non illum? FFP or SFP? Distances you plan on shooting?

The answers will help a true pick!

hunting and paper punching

some prarie dogs and ground hogs too.

illum- i don't care

prefer sfp, ffp is too thick at long range for me

want to stick to 30mm, i want the nightforce atacr, but it's 34mm

I have a number of NF scopes and I am happy with them. But for my next scope I am really looking at a Kahles. And most likely this one.

Two reviews of Kahles.

Maybe consider two scopes...SS 16 or 20X for your long distance yah-yahs and an SS 3-9 for hunting.

This is maybe a little much magnification but have you looked at the Sightron SIII it is a different beast better in everyway to the SI, SII, SII Big Sky.

I will assume for Prairie Dogs and Ground Hogs you will be shooting this past 100 yards.

I think the 6x bottom would be limited FOV at 100 but just near perfect at any distance past 100 I will also assume that you want above 16x at the top end which is why I suggest the Sightron SIII 6-24x

Other suggestions would be:

Sightron 3.5-10x44 SIII 30mm Riflescope Mil-Dot Sightron 3.5-10x44 SIII 30mm Riflescope
Stock # - SIIISS3510X44LRMD
  • Matte
  • Mil-Dot
  • 30mm
  • Side Focus
  • 1/4 MOA Target Knobs
$796.95
Add Sightron 3.5-10x44 SIII 30mm Riflescope to Cart

If you can spend more than $2k do it...

If not this is pretty hard to beat for under $1100 and it performs up to the $2k range.

i prefer mil/mil, but don't care for standard mildot, otherwise i think the sightron would be great. and i don't care for MOA scopes.

i don't want 2 different scopes, and the 3-9 ss is not on my list.

ground hogs and prairie dogs are out to about 700.

i know i'm being picky, sorry

from all of my research, if you want: SFP, 30mm tube, mil/mil, with a $2k budget, you get a NightForce NXS

Particularly if you're hard on scopes.

Re: my earlier suggestion to consider two scopes. You have two major conflicting use requirements (long range shooting and hunting from close-in to whatever range you're comfortable with. Then adding in requirements like SFP and a restricted budget makes it even harder. If you're going to stick under $1500 and want SFP, then consider scopes like the Vortex, Sightron or IOR and plan on being kinder to your equipment. In the $1700-$2000 range you can get a NF 3.5-15 NXS (I wouldn't want to hunt with the 5.5-22.

So who cares if the SS 3-9 wasn't on your list? Maybe you should be grateful people are willing to make constructive, practical suggestions to solve your caviar tastes on a fish filet budget.

What about the IOR 4-14x.  It is Mil/Mil but is SFP.  IOR has excellent glass as well.

I have had many iors. Still have one. I would say them and the ss hd glass is very close. U will not be unhappy with the optics of an ior. Good stuff

My AR10 has a 20" and is in 260Rem, but mine wears a Hensoldt 3-12 and is a perfect fit.

Why no 34mm?

Enjoy the IOR.

And lube the hell out of the AR10 bolt, LOTS! When you think it is well lubed, add just a little more.

i'd love to have a hensoldt, but can't, i'm already over budget on the rifle.

i'd just like to keep everything 30mm, i don't need the added cost or adjustment for 34mm on a 308 gas gun. i live in DE now, so no suppressors.

just to throw something else in the mix, what about the new bushnells. they look good on paper, but i know their warranty/CS used to suck.
