Yup, you can buy an sps for around $400.  Sometimes at walmart you can get them a little cheaper than that. Or if you could find a good used one that would be good also.

You can buy the actions, but they cost as much as the whole SPS gun. But if you just buy the action you don't have to deal with all the extra parts.

My next .308 is going to be built off an FN Herstal. I like the controled feed actions.you can pick up a barreld action for not much money.

Any short action with a bolt face for standard .472" (.30-06 family) case head diameter will work for .308.  If you want to base it off a Rem 700 action, any 700 short action with the standard bolt face will work.  There's no such thing as a 700 action made specifically for .308.  The 700 SA with standard bolt face will work with any round based on a short action length case with .472" rim dia.  At one point, I believe M idway sold 700 actions only; don't know if that's still the case.  Brownell's used to sell them as well, but I don't see them in their latest catalog.  If you plan to refinish the metal anyway, you can use any beater used 700 SA rifle as the donor for your action.  It's difficult to do any real harm mechanically to the action, as long as the last owner didn't fire overpressure loads in it, so even if the rest of the gun is totally trashed, chances are the action is still good.

Good luck with your project!
