I hope this is not the wrong place.  Didn't see a gunsmith forum, so here goes.  Real simple question.  Will a 300 Winchester reamer clean up a 30-338 chamber without needing to set the barrel back?  This is a typical simple resize of a 338 Win or neck up a 7mm Rem job, no improvements.

Reason for the question is I have my hands on a pre 64 Win 70 that left the factory as a 30-06.  We were told it was now a 308 Norma.  Well,  factory 308 Norma rounds are simply too long.  I necked up and fireformed some 7 RM and this is what it is.  I'm sort of thinking out loud here, as the rifle has .50 inch freebore.  A 180 Hornady Spire Point IL contacts the rifling at an OAL of 3.445".  There is barely enough bullet in the case to hold it.  I have not shot at targets yet.  I'll start off with some seated base of bullet to bottom of neck, or max length for the magazine, for starters and see how it shoots.  My thinking is that I have 300 Winchester brass, dies and all necessary components and lots of experience with the 300WM.  Seems like the 300 WM rechamber would get rid of some freebore.  I am not thinking the freebore is necessarily a problem.  Just that my experience with freebore is that freebored rifles can shoot, but not all freebored rifles will.

Final judgement awaits some serious development and shooting, which begins today.  Keeping options open.

I thought the 308 Norma was fatter than the 300 Winchester.
