This may sound crazy but I live in Mississippi and have only gone deer huntin 3 times in my life.  Now I'm 24 and have caught the huntin bug.  I have 28 acres to hunt on this year and will be using a hand-me-down 30-30 that my dad used when he was my age.  Most shots I will taking will be inside of 100 yards and could probably be made with iron sights.  Some people have suggested a red dot or a peep sight but I want more advice on what to put on it, if anything.

Is there a budget limit?  Peep sights can be had for most levers.  Is it drilled for a scope base for a red dot?

Is it for a Marlin or a winchester?  If a winchester is it an angle eject?

I hunt in Mississippi (competitor Trace area) and 100 yards will be a long shot in Mississippi.

Let us know your budget and "needs".

Hunting any hogs?

If your rifle is an older hand me down it may not be drilled and tapped for sights.  so you'll have to get that checked out.  Scopes are great but if you're brush shooting with 100 yd as a max pretty hard to beat a good aperature sight like a Williams.  Never liked the semi-buckhorn sights, obscures too much of the target.   If my eyes were younger would still be using a peep.

My 30-30 is a Marlin 336.  I'm leaning towards the peep sight simply because I want to be able to pull it up quick and get a shot off when walkin cut over or snoozin in my ground blind.  I've heard that Williams makes a pretty good peep sight with interchangable peeps for hunting large or small game.

Rancid Coolaid: I've never been on a hog hunt.  I live in Bruce and people kill them all the time around here.  Never gotten into it, but I wasn't a deer hunter before this year either.

I liked my Williams peep.  Had a threaded insert for target/sighting in work and when removed for hunting became what is commonly called today a "ghost ring" sight.  Very fast, just place your bead on your target and depress the bang button.

If you want a scope I would look at a 1-4xish variable.  I have a Sightron 1-5x on my Marlin and it is a good setup for it.  Crazy fast on low power but gives you a little mag if or when you need it.

Leupold, Sightron, Bushnell, Trijicon, Weaver, all make good affordable low powered scopes.

Good suggestion from supertool for scope range.

Personal preference of course but I love the feel of a '94 with irons, and they carry so well.

I grew up with a peep on a 94, but I believe a low power scope would do you better. I love the carrying qualities of a peep on a 94 or 336 but I never felt as comfortable shooting them as a scope.

Most 336 are tapped for scopes, only the older ones are not.  I think you couldn't go wrong with a 2.5x fixed or even a 4x fixed.  The lower the power the better the shots at moving quarry.

I'd go leupold if my pockets were deeper, because they are light and small, but I wouldn't hesitate to put on a used old weaver 2.5 also.
