I remember coming across this a couple years ago and being impressed by the stats. I sometimes wonder if one of the major factors is the excess space in .30-06 cartridges - at least in service loads of the past. I've read, but never tested with my own M1, that better accuracy was obtained by tilting the rifle up between shots so that the powder would all be towards the rear of the cartridge each time. .308 loads tend to fill up the cartridge more, perhaps providing more uniform ignition.

There are other factors in choosing a cartridge besides accuracy and I've seen friends of mine shooting their .30-06s @ 200 yards good enough to make kill shots on any big game animal. The .30-06 can obviously pack some more power too. I certainly am partial to the .308 though since I've mostly owned rifles with that chambering. However, according to a recent article by Berger ballistician (and champion Palma shooter) Bryan Litz, one might well consider a heavy-for-caliber 7mm bullet (http://www.longrangehunting.com/articles/30-caliber-1.php). Just out of curiousity, I ran ballistics calculations for the nearest bullet to mine (.284 Nosler 160gr. Accubond in 7mm-08 vs. .30 165 gr. Accubond in .308) and the numbers were a little better (like .5" or so) on windage @ 300 yards. That's not enough to make me switch.
