More info would be helpful, but based upon what is there, a Swift Premier 4-12 would be an excellent choice.

Yes the Simmons scopes that come with their package deals are dogs. I'd second pyro on the Vortex

My sons .308 with a 1 in 10 twist seems to love the 125 gr Nosler BTs with 48.5 gr of Varget I'm getting groups of half MOA and better at 100 yards. I've also loaded some 150 gr SST for him but he han't gotten out to the range with them yet. The 125s seem to shoot pretty flat too.  You may want to give them a try.

I think the other scopes mentioned are better than the xv-1 or the rifleman these are Leupolds cheapest models? if you want the Leupold step up to the vxII.

Spend $20 more and pick up a Nikon Team Primos. You'll be glad you did.

My second choice would be the Bushnell Elite 3200 that someone else suggested.

My third Choice would be a Weaver V10 2-10x38.

If money is tight then I'd look for a Weaver V9 3-9x38.

He mentions hunting in the forest.  Think that Nikon BDC reticle will work ok for him?

it doesnt bother me after you use it for a little bit you forget its even there, the circles are pretty small so you really dont notice them unless your looking for them.

I agree completely. You hardly notice them unless you're looking for them.

I put a Monarch with the BDC on my AR and the circles so far are driving me nuts... maybe in time , but who knows...

I'd go with the 3200 3x9...with the Weavers as a second choice...

The scope included with the Slam Package is nowhere near the quality of the Team Primos.

OK if indeed you are a rookie hunter .500 yrds is a very very long poke at any animal  it requires lots of skill and lots of practice. and I don't mean a few times to the range or shooting at rocks way off yonder? you need to learn you ballistics a bit and your gun it self. Please practice and see if you are really capable of doing such a task. who knows maybe you have, and can. but any advise is better than none .   have fun! Big Grin

One of the biggest mistakes,in my opinion, some guys make in choosing a scope is overpowering themselves on the low end.  BIG MISTAKE!  Wes's choice of that Bushnell Trophy is another viable choice.
