Hey I just bought a Marlin XL7 30-06 and am looking for scope around $200. I usually hunt in the open fields of western Kansas but I am going to go on an elk hunt in Colorado in a year or so. With that said scopes I have looked at are:

  • Nikon Buckmaster (with or without BDC)
  • Leupold Rifleman
  • Nikon Prostaff
  • Bushnell 3200

Welcome to the OT

Personally I am a big fan of Bushnell's Elite series--the 4200 Elite 3x9 is one of the best values in optics and certainly worth the stretch in budget ..otherwise - the 3200 Elite is a good buy and the Rainguard is a plus-- OR if you don't mind the BDC reticle- the Nikon Primos is excellent ( see SWFA website)

It would be hard to trump this for $200. It would out run any of those on your list. After the Primos, I'd look at a Sightron SII.

Well, Im not sure if they are any worse because they were new until returned. I know that Nikon Monarchs once reconditioned only carry a 90 day warranty opposed to the Lifetime warranty when they are new. I kind of wondered the same thing, but if you think of it they only check a certain number in each batch to see if they pass certain tests. If it is reconditioned at least your are pretty sure your scope got individual attention and testing so actually the odds are it is more likely to be problem free. That said I still havent bought any reconditioned ones myself.

I also like the 4200 3x9 and the Nikon Primos, these are the best values in the $200-275 range.

I wouldn't hesitate to look at the Sightron SII series.  The 3-9s can be had for 200 or less.  Plus they have good customer service and warranty.  Not to mention the scopes are pretty good for the price.

jayhawk....... if you're considering the Buckmaster with a BDC, you WON'T find a better value than the Nikon Primos.  It has the Monarch UCC glass, which is better than the Buckmaster and its only $199.99.  Simply put, there isn't a better deal available!  If you want to spend more than $200.00, then you have some options.

I agree with tip, though I wish it also came with the "plex" option.

Leupold doesnt start to get useful until you get to the VXIII scopes.  I like the Sightron suggestion for decent glass. The Nikon Primos has decent glass plus a balistic reticle.  Problem with balistic reticles is they usually only work at the highest power however I think this one might be a winner as the max power is lower than the rest of the pack.

I find that I am also intrigued by this but glass quality is not the best however being able to dial in correction for distance means a lot to me.
