Hello all, and thank you. I desperately need a really good scope for long range hunting. Have heard good things on Nikon, Bushnell, and even a little stuff on Tasco lately.

I REALLY want clear glass with great light transmission. Does anybody know of any reliable scope tests / comparrisson / Ratings anywhere???

Anyway thanks for your help!

Thank You - Rod

Yes... i was unclear about the range. I will be shooting at some closer range say 25 - poss 350. It is a new 22-250 and am not sure what it can do or what i can do with it. I had thought 4X or most likely 6X what do you all think?

thank you

There are tons of scopes in your price range and that will fit your mission.

You want a variable starting with about 3 power and going up to 10-26 power, approx.

The correct reticle is important.  Ask some of the guys in the Varmint Scope area here.

In your budget, look at Nikon Monarchs, Weaver Grand Slams, Sightron II, Burris Sig Select, even some Leupold VX IIIs.

Superlite,

You might also define "varmint" as well.  A reticle considered optimal for small varmints like chucks, ground squirrels, and prairie dogs wouldn't necessarily be optimal for larger varmints like coyotes and other predators.

A 2.5-10X is ideal for your 25 - 350 yard shooting distances.  FWIW, I've found that when shooting at varmints during the middle of a warm day, I can't really use beyond about 12 - 14X effectively due to heat mirage.

Frankly, if I had about $450.00 to spend, I would go with a Sightron II with side focus.  You can go with a nice plex reticle or a Mildot.

They can be had for that price and the quality is top notch.  Yes, I own one.

Also would go with Nikon over Burris otherwise.

SWFA should be selling Sightrons soon.

I'm army_eod and I approve this message.

I would go 4200 4-16X40 especially if on a sporter rifle maybe the 6-24 if on a varmint style

These scopes represent some of the finest scopes that can be had for the $500 range. All of these have good glass and would be good varmit scopes. As  you can see two are fixed power mid level power range and two are variable mid level to high power range. With a variable you can get away with having more power because you can turn the power down as the light conditions become dim and you will still be able to use the scope. Since I dont know what you hunt or how you hunt it I take the cartridge - 22-2
