I know this topic has been ventilated in various ways, however, please humor me. As I understand it, the European mfgs built scopes with 30 mm tubes, because it was a handy dimension. And so they just kept it up. In addition, there is no real optical advantage to 30 mm vs 1" tubes. My brother bought a L VX lll 4.5-14X50 unit. And it has a 30 mm tube. Why did L build a scope with a 30 mm tube? European chic, or what?

Thank you Cheaptrick. The scope is for deer hunting in MT, at ranges no over say 300 yards. Sounds like old world chic to me. |

Your more than welcome, but I don't know if I answered effectively.
Big game dedicated hunting scopes are good to go FOR ME in a 1" tube. 30mm tubes are sure nice for long distance, but even then, canted rails cope well with the lack adjustment of the 1 inchers.
My hunting scopes are , or were when I had one, a "set it and forget it affair" Enter.... The Zeiss Conquest in a 3-9x or 3.5-10 with a 44mm objective.
As far as why did Leupold even MAKE the "L"?? IMO, it was a desperate marketing ploy that flopped.
