I think I am settled on one of these 3 scopes and I would like some of your opinions. The Leupold Mark 4  6.5 - 20 x 50mm, the Lecia 3.5 - 14 x 42mm, and the Zeiss 5 - 25 x 50mm Conquest HD5 are the ones I am thinking serious about. The scope will be on a Savage 11  6.5 x .284. I will shoot anywhere from 100 to 800 yds with the gun. I will also sit in a shooting house for deer in the 250 - 400 yd range. I am mostly concerned with quality of view in the scope. I do want a target still turret and retical. I am not sure what I want as far as first or second focal plane are concerned. These may all be second focal planes anyway, I dont know. Give me some good opinions if you are familar with these scopes please.

What happened to the Nightforce? The Nightforce is probably two steps above the Leupold Mark 4 glass wise. When you compared the NF and the Lecia did you adjust the diopter setting? I have found that for me if the diopter is not set for my eyes with the NF it looks cloudy and clear when set properly.

I am not sure how much elevation you will need to get to 800yds with a 6.5x284. The Lecia only has a total of 32.5MOA so that gives you somewhere around 16 or 17 MOA plus or minus of usable elevation adjustment. So I am guessing that will not work. The Zeiss has 65MOA which gives you around 32.5MOA of usable adjustment. And you could use a 20MOA base with the Zeiss and that would probably work. But with a 20MOA base and the Lecia you probably would not be able to shoot at shorter distances since you would likely be too high. Also I believe all three of the scopes you listed are SFP.

If you want a SFP scope I would still look at NF or Sightron SIII. And if you want a FFP scope I would look at a SS 5-20. Either of the three will have good glass and enough elevation to do what you want. Another choice if you can swing $2400 is a Kahles 3-12. It has outstanding glass and adjustments.

The Leupold MK 4 is more than enough scope to go out to 800. We were out few weeks ago with my 300 Weatherby (Conquest 4.5-14) and my friends custom Rem in 308 (4.5-14X50 MK4) and had no problems with milk jugs out to 1000 with his setup.  I think his glass in as good as mine and he didnt run out of elevation adjustment.

Personally, I think you are way over scoping the rifle in terms of magnification given what you want to do with it.

I sometimes feel like I am flogging the proverbial dead horse but great glass trumps magnification.
A great 3-12 will do everything you want.
I am enamored with the Kahles K312, it replaced my USO 3-17
I can lock in on clay pidgeons on a berm at 1K with it....

Thanks for the thoughts. I agree I don't need all that magnifcation but I am one of those kind that likes to fill my field of view with the target.

I made a purchase. I had a chance to look at several scopes the other day and do some side by side comparisons. I walked out the door with the Zeiss 5-25 x 50 HD5 with the varmint reticle. It has some real nice glass in it for sure and I really like the fine crosshairs with lockable target turrets. I hope it works for me. I will keep you updated as I go through the process of getting everything setup.

Congrats on the purchase.

Be aware that, when hunting, filling the reticle with animal means if the animal does drop on the spot, reacquiring the target can be a challenge.
