I'm worked up some new reloads for my 22'' 280 Rem with the following:

Reloader-22 (53, 54, 55, 56, 57 & 57.5 gr.)
140 gr. Sierra Gameking
2-Fired Win. Brass
CCI LR Primer

Everything was ran over a chrony and I'm a little confused with the results.  Had a 40 fps jump between group A & B, a 40 fps drop from B-C, & a 100 fps jump from C-D.  The groups opened up as the velocity increased with best group (C) measuring just a hair over 0.5'' @ 2561 fps (55 gr.).  I'm more than happy with 0.5'' group but I'd like to see a little more velocity.  Is R-22 too slow-burning for the 22'' barrel with this bullet?  Would IMR-4350 or 4831 be a better choice?

The reason I'm a little puzzled is I'm getting really good results with R-22 under 140 gr. TSX's.

Any thoughts?

I'd be in IMR-4350 or IMR-4831 mode for that bullet weight in the standard 280. Heck, I get close to 3200 fps from the Ackley version with 140's. Don't have a manual at my fingertip's, but those amounts of R22 seem low, but I'm only basing that on how much IMR-4831 I use in my Ackley (60 grs).

To answer your other question about R22 being to slow, IMO yes it is to slow for that bullet weight.

not to hijack a thread, but...
Roy Finn,
what FPS are you getting with your 280AI and 60g of IMR4831?

I am running 59g with the 140 AB and it is making one hole hundred yard groups and yesterday I was at our hunting property and was testing at 350 yards.

I haven't chronoed this load but I thinking it should be around 3150.
I run a 250 yard zero which is +2 at 100 and should be 7" low at 350

I was getting right at 1" at 350 but my drop was 11"
Really puzzling to me as I ran the ballistics calc on my my Iphone and even dropping the FPS to 2900  or lowering the BC of the bullet to .450 didn't make that much of a drop at 350.

I need to chrono the load for sure.
This rifle has always shot the 140 ABs great before and I am very puzzle by the difference in drop.

My range was an inprovised one on the property but I used my range finder to get the range.
I am wondering if perhaps my RF is wrong.
Need to test it against known distances.

Getting very close to 3200 w/Nosler 140 BT's from the 24 inch barrel on my 280 Ackley.

Gotcha
I had chronoed some loads with IMR4350 at .5 under max and was around 3150.
The IMR 4831 produced better groups
I am 1g under max with no signs of over pressure and could go up but the groups opened up at 59.2
Probably need to keep increasing to get to tr next accuracy node.
Not sure I want to though.

Mine is a 24" as well.
