i was wondering if my tikka t3 270 Winchester shooting 130 grain bullets would be enough to take down an elk. and if so what ammo would you recommend, i do not reload so it will have to be a factory load. Thanks

thats fine as long as you place your shots well. something in a 150gr variety would make me feel better.

I killed an elk last year with a 140 grain TSX out of my 270 win.  Bullet worked as advertised.  I would use a premium bullet, though.

Coby, did you hit any heavy bones like shoulder with the TSX? I haven't tried any of the Barnes offerings. When I start to get low on some other bullets, I would like to, especially in 7 and 6.5mm.

Shot placement is the key so get as close as possible. 270 is more than capable.

Are you shooting a cow/spike or a large bull?  If it is a cow or spike then the 130 would work just fine.  Obviously heavier is better, but it will work.  My dad and I have killed quite a few spike elk with 100 grain .243 bullets.

If it is a big bull I would for sure go with a heavy as you can get.  They have a lot of muscle that the extra weight of the bullet will help push through.

150 grain Nolser partition loads from Federal Premium would be great.

Worry not,

the Barnes TSX in 130 or 140 will do the job just fine!

One way to think about it:  Nosler says their partitions are designed to retain 60% of their weight, so a 150 partition would have around 90 grains left after expansion.  Barnes are designed to retain "virtually" all of their weight, so with the lighter Barnes you are carrying more weight, deeper.

I shot a big, healthy six point with a 140 TSX (from a 270 wsm) and it went through both shoulders.  It did bend the bullet and tear off one "petal" of the X, but it was an impressive one-shot kill none-the-less.  The lungs were in ribbons.

Barnes' terminal performance performs above and beyond their caliber and weight.

Here is a pic of the bullet recovered (poking out the far side hide) from that bull:

Ive killed a couple Elk with a 270, never had any problem...It would be even better today with the Nosler Accubond or Barnes TTSX or TSX... I think at the time I was using my ol 270 I was shooting Boatails or Nosler Partions.. That Partion is a good lil bullet too!

Now I have a 270 wsm, I still miss my old Winchester Featherweight 270 though.....Anyway Good luck to ya partner...

I think the 140 gr bullet in .277 is a good compromise.

Wonder what all those dead elk that got shot with plain old 130 gr. lead core bullets during the early days are saying these days.

First elk I ever shot was with a 270 shooting 130 gr Hornady BTSPs.   Dropped him no problem.  This year I am taking my 270 again (most likely.  Might have my 300 along as well if I get it done in time).  I am shooting the 140 gr Hornady BTSP.  It is about shot placement.  You can do it with that setup.

hmmmm.  I don't think I really took a good look at what the bullet went through.  Definitely didn't hit any heavy bone, though.  Went all the way through.
