Was out in Montana for work this week, local Cabelas had 2 of the Lazerguard Vanguard Series 2 in 257 wby, so got my pick.  I was holding for something in a 26" barrel but couldnt pass it up, no sales tax either and they just started their military discount.  Stock is beautiful, smooth bolt, nice trigger.

So, had a few scopes in mind...use medium and large game, varying conditions, would expect it to be one that travels with me a lot for its versatility.  Anyways, thinking about the following, would appreciate thoughts.

1.  Swaro Z3, 3-10 or 4-12x50

2.  Zeiss Conquest HD in one of the same power ranges

3.  Leupold VX3...think its considerably cheaper than the first two, but would it be worth it on the value scale compared to the others?

Wanting to keep it under 1,000....any ideas on these, or other suggestions?  Was leaning toward a 4A reticle as it should be pretty darn flat out to as far as I want to shoot...shouldnt need a lot of junk on the reticle.

Thanks

I'm a bit wary of the Z3 line. I've heard of multiple problems with them. I want to love them but I just keep hearing of them loosing zero from broken springs. If someone can assure me I am wrong and it is just internet bull, I would love to hear it.

Are you concerned about weight?

Z3 line is a good choice.  I have the 3-10 with the BRH reticle on my Kimber 84M in 7mm-08.  Reticle is a little thin for low light but an excellent scope.

My Weatherby in 257 Wby wears a Leupold VX-6 2.5-12x42.  Great scope.  Another good option is the Leica ER, which can be had for below your price point.  I have the 2-10x42 and the glass is better than either of the two above, but difference is slight.

Take a look at the Meopta Meostar line.  Another excellent choice.

How does the Meostar rank in the picks? 3.5-10x50 can be had at for less than z3 or conquest hd.

Based on my experience (owned two), the Meostar falls slightly below the Z3 in overall optical quality but you aren't giving up much.

I replaced mine with a Leica ERi and Leupold VX-6, which are equivalent to or slightly better than the Z3 for me.

No experience with the Conquest HD.  I've owned a couple of its predecessors (Conquest), which are good scopes but aren't in same class as the Meostar.

Out of the ones you have listed I would recommend the Z3. I have 4 of them and for less than 1k they are hard to beat. Excellent optics, tracking, WIDE view and Very lightweight. I love how lightweight the Z3 line is. I've never had an issue out of any of my Swarovski's and their customer service is outstanding if you should ever need it. That being said I've never had an issue with my Conquest either but they are heavier, larger and a tad below with the optics compared to the Z3 (just my opionon). I am not a leupold fan optically but they do make a solid scope with excellent customer service.

I like the #4 reticle and the #1 as well. Therefore most of my Swarovski scopes are #4. The Trijicon Accupoint 3-9x40 with the post green reticle is also another great option. It is lightweight and the post is similar to a #1 reticle. The Trijicon is about the same as the Leupold V3 optically. I will also add from what is posted above about the Leica...wonderful scope but it is a good bit higher. I like mine for sure.

Best of luck on the search! I would recommend the Z3 in the mix you listed. Great scope for the money.

I haven't heard very many complaints about the Z3 line.

I have a 4-12X50 BRH and I have had it mounted on three different rifles with nothing but solid performance (including a 300 RUM).  It is a fine scope.

The Meostar R1 series are similar optically to the Z3.

The Meostar R2 could also be on your radar.

I have the Zeiss hd5 in the 5x25x50 & I love it. I actually just took three of my scopes out tonight for a low light test.  The Zeiss hd vs leupold vx3 3.5x10x50 & vortex viper hs 6x24x50.  For the money difference the v3 actually did pretty well against the hd5 which kinda saddens me. I notice that there is a couple good v3's on the sample list. I'm considering getting another scope & was looking @ the monarch 7 & the viper until I  did the comparison. I just took advantage of the vortex sale on here on the viper 6x24x50 & put it on my 270 bee

Well good news or bad news depending on how you look at it....My Lazerguard will have a new safemate...found a great buy on a new Accumark Mark V in 257 as well, so now twice the optical fun. Got my 26" barrel after all!
