Hello,
I have been hoping to get some thoughts from users in this forum. I am completing my AR build and have kicked around the idea of going after the trijicon 2.5-10x56 accupoint to put on my rifle. I plan on using this gun for coyote and hog. I became attracted to the 2.5-10 because of the large objective lens, giving me large field of view. I intend to zero it at 50 yards (so it shoots at flat again at around 200yds again, and only slightly high at 100), since I will not plan on making shots exceeding 250 yards. My only question is: has anyone experienced any issues with a 56mm, or similarly large, objective? Since it sits higher from the barrel, can i anticipate issues with shots somewhere between 25 and 250 yards? I am interested in the 2.5-10 because the low end power is lower than trijicon's 3-9x40, and the objective is larger. |

a larger objective actually has nothing to do with larger FOV.
It will be brighter in low light at a higher mag than the 3-9x40 scope But as far as cleaning the objective. That shouldn't be an issue as long as you use a typical height AR mount. |

Thank you for correcting me, much appreciated. I'll probably end up throwing it in a Bobro mount. I appreciate the input. I just didn't want to overlook some issue that may come with a large objective.

Rifles are like violins. They need to fit if you are to play well. Every single time i tried to shoot from field positions a rifle with a large scope representing 1/4 of the total weight of the rifle positioned well over the bore line i found that the rifle had a poor balance and i shot poorly.
As soon as i switched to a better balanced rifle with a smaller lighter scope i had no problem hitting the gong. Just this morning i shot a .375 with a small low mounted scope at 200 yards (seated, kneeling, leaning, and prone). I hit 60 out of 60 times into the 6" gong. When the rifle had a high mounted 50 mm scope (high rings), i hit less often. If you carry the concrete shooting bench with you in the woods, it makes no difference. Just something to think about.

I have owned both, used both quite a bit in the field. The 3-9 is plenty bright and much smaller, I still have it. The 2.5-10 sat on a 16" barrel AR that was always run suppressed, weight wasn't the primary issue, but it is a large scope for such a small gun, just be aware.
Both are great in low light. |

The 2.5-10x56 is a nice scope if you plan to use it in very low light. It is a bit heavy and on most ARs, it would not be my choice. However, if this is for night use, then it is a good way to go.

Thanks for the feedback.
My rifle has a 16" barrel and a Magpul PRS stock with the adjustable stock. I intend to use this as a range, hog, and coyote rifle. I am not too worried about the weight and I should be able to line up behind either scope with the adjustable stock so in that issue, I'm not too worried about the scope sitting a little high off the bore. The 3-9x40 is a 1in. tube, 12.4in, weighing 13.4oz. The 2.5-10x56 is 30mm tube, 13.8in., weighing 20.7 oz.

Old thread but still relevant as I am in the same position as shooter2440. The search feature answered a lot of questions. Since this is a 4 year old thread is there anything new that someone would recommend for the same purposes? I'm leaning towards the Trijicon 3-9 with a triangle post. I need a different set up than my Leupold 1.5-5x24.

The Trijicon 3-9x40 will be relevant to big game hunting until the day they stop making ‘em... and beyond. 👍

I used to use that set up on an AR-10 308. While very effective, the cons outweigh the pros. AR-10s are heavy. With that scope, their even heavier. My AR-10 was also “boxy” with sharp edges everywhere. Uncomfortable to carry around all night. I know that people use AR-15s for hunting hogs but I prefer something light, accurate and powerful nowadays. I use a Sako A7 in 270 WSM with the Trijicon 3-9X40 mentioned. I prefer the mildot reticle. I has the smallest illuminated dot. That’s a factor when shooting at night. Both the brightness of the illumination and the physical size of the illuminated area can be difficult to see past, and line up on your target. Pic is from 2013. I killed a lot of boars with that rig. Seven years later, I still kill my share but try not to suffer as much doing it.
