I have a savage .243 that came with a simmons 3x9.  I am looking to upgrade to a 4x12 or similar.  This gun is for my son who this past weekend dropped his first 7 point, 3 pigs , and one doe.  Yippee
He is hooked and now I want to upgrade his scope.

Looking to spend 300-500.

Suggestions?

Those look good.

What a about something that would be comprable in price as a VX1 4x12?

About 279-299?

In that case I would drop down to a 3-9x.  http://www.swfa.com/pc-7280-185-bushnell-3-9x40-elite-4200-rifle-scope.aspx

You will gain a ton more with better optics than you will with cheaper optics with higher magnification.  Almost everyone on this site can tell you that.  Quality optics with lower powers will always be better than cheaper optics with higher power.  I have two of those 4200 3-9x and they are a very fine hunting scope.

A 243 is a 250-300 yard deer round. Why a 4x12? Better to go with a 3x9, get the better optics and do so for less money. The VX1 is not comparible to the 4200. To get 4200 optics, you need at least a VX3 in the Leupold. For the bucks, you can`t beat the 3-9x40 Elite 4200.

I agree, 3x9 scopes offer the best value, as has been stated here a many of time: always pick quality not quantity.

I put the 3-9x40 Elite 4200 on my .270 per the advice given here. I am very satisfyed with it as I'm sure you and your son would be. But I have to ask ya what in the world is wrong with that simmons. Sound like he's already killing everything in sight with it.

the sighttron sII big sky in 3x9x42 is better yet and its less than $400 and they have a no questions asked free replacement for life warranty, and they make nice scopes. plus if junior later decided to buy a magnum of some sort the big sky has plenty of eye relief to handle any magnums he would be buying.

I really like the Nikon Monarch's.  I have a 4-16 x 50 Monarch on a .243 WSSM but I use it for varmits.  For shooting deer and pigs you don't want to have to fool with the Parallax adjustment, as you don't usually have time to play with the scope.  For hunting game I would recommend a Monarch like the 2.5 - 10 x 42 or the 2.5 - 10 x 50.  I would also recommend the Nikoplex reticle, as the BDC just puts more stuff in the sight picture to hide your target on quick shots.
