Just a quick question...

I just bought a Browning A-Bolt II in .223 WSSM and am looking to purchase a scope for it, but not sure what would be best as far as power goes.  I am wanting to keep the price of the scope under $500, but obviously cheaper is better.

Thanks,

Jonathan

I have an A Bolt in 223 WSSM.  I put a Leupold VXIII 3.5-10X40 on it and like it a lot.  I never have a need to shoot over 300 yds, and 10X is plenty.  I didn't want to put a giant scope on the A Bolt.  Mine is a composite stalker.

The Weaver Grand Slam 3-10 is one of the best values out there in an above average scope.  Also consider the Burris Fullfield II 3-9x40, Elite 4200 2.5-10x40 or a Zeiss Conquest 3-9x40.

Man i'd go with a Burris 4-16X (for looong-range coyotes) Signature with Ballistic Mil-Dot reticle, and i'd drive the JLK 65 gr. LD at high-velocity out of that rig. That Burris would provide almost 900 yds. of trajectory compensation (with that bullet on board).

For a rifle in this caliber (.223 WSSM) I would probably go with higher magnification. Something in the 4-16 or 6-24 range, especially if you will be doing a lot of shooting at long range on small varmints.
